The National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) is proud to partner with The Allstate Foundation in California to support youth safety efforts of students through their SAVE Chapters.

2010-2011

National SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) in partnership with The Allstate Foundation is sponsoring 18 schools and chapters in California in an effort to promote teen driver safety awareness in America's youth. A $100,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation will allow National SAVE and The Allstate Foundation's Teen Safe Driving program to be implemented in selected schools, chapters, community agencies or related programs. SAVE will utilize Allstate’s nationally successful X The TXT events to increase awareness among teens of the risks involved with cell phone use and teen driving. Key times for these student awareness campaigns include back-to-school periods, holidays, Teen Safe Driving Month in May, prom season, and graduation.

Participating schools/agencies:

  • Crawford High School/SAY San Diego - San Diego, CA
    The Crawford High School has a new SAVE Chapter this year. Their theme for SAVE is "Making Healthy Choices." The SAVE/SAY San Diego club joined with other student leaders in the Fall of 2010 to survey youth about the issue of substance abuse and its direct connection to violence. In November they participated in the Harvest Festival, an on campus event, as means for recruiting for their club. They sold fresh fruit cups and shared information to other students about their club. In February the students participated in Love Fest, an on campus event, where they learned that February was Teen Relationship Violence Prevention month. They gathered information about the subject and passed it out. They handed out a Healthy Relationships quiz while selling heart shaped lollipops with more information about their club.

    An X the TXT event was held on March 24, 2011 and was attended by Allstate agent Damion Anglin. April was the Red Ribbon walk for Kiki Camarena, an event in memory of a local police officer who was killed in the line of duty. May's focus was on participation in Racing for Hope, an event by Operation For Hope, a partnership built through the X the TXT Event. Also in May was the International Fair, an event that encourages the celebration of diversity and tolerance on the school campus.

  • Serra High School, San Diego, CA
    The SAVE/ELEVATED Chapter at Serra High School spent a good part of the Fall focusing on building interpersonal relationships within the club to strengthen its potential for success. A cultural dancing event to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month helps students recognize the importance of diversity and tolerance.

    In April the students participated in the Red Ribbon walk for Kiki Camarena. This was in memory of a local police officer who was killed in the line of duty. This event is put on by Operation For Hope, a partnership built through the X Event. The students worked on a video that addresses Teen Dating Violence solutions as well as safe driving. In May students participated in the International Fair, which encourages the celebration of diversity and encourage tolerance on their campus. More than 200 pledge cards were stamped by teens during the X the TXT event on Friday, April 29, 2011. Various speakers spoke about friends and family they've lost due to distracted driving incidences. A California Highway Patrol officer was on hand with his CHP vehicle and beer goggles. Allstate agent Damion Anglin assisted with the event.

  • Paso Robles High School - Paso Robles, CA
    The Paso Robles High School SAVE Chapter held their first International Day of Peace on September 21, 2010. Messages of peace were displayed on school walls, songs of peace were performed, and students received stickers. A Back to School Safety message was included in The Daily Bearcat newsletter. One of the SAVE members also spoke about safe driving at a driver's education class. During America's Safe Schools Week in October, articles and tips were published in the school newspaper and promotional items such as bookmarks and keychains were distributed to increase awareness. On May 26, 2011 an X the TXT event was held on campus during lunchtime and a presentation was made during a parent open house that evening.

  • Helix Charter High School - La Mesa, CA
    In November 2010, the Helix High School SAVE/SADD Chapter held a lunchtime seatbelt and DUI awareness activity. A mock seat belt check with the assistance of the La Mesa Police Department took place in December. In the winter a Reality Party was held - a staged event by students where parents were given a tour of a "typical" high school drinking party. The party covered current issues such as drinking, drugs, driving, fighting, and sexual advances. Over 60 parents were in attendance. An X the TXT event was held in the spring of 2011, Students were quizzed on statistics related to texting while driving and were given sobering statistics on the realities. Students were given thumb bands as prizes for correct guesses.

    The chapter's final event of the year was a safe driving event with students from Vista La Mesa Elementary School on May 21, 2011 at DCH Honda in Lemon Grove CA. We are inviting the. The high school students talked about safety in and around cars and cardboard box cars were created for a "drive-in movie" showing of the movie "Cars." An award was be given for best car!

    The Helix High School SAVE Chapters feels that reaching just one student can make a difference. Their intent is that through constant messages and conversation, teens can be kept safer on the road in the future.

  • Shenandoah High School - El Dorado, CA
    Shenandoah's Teen Safe Driving Event was held on March 28, 2011 and involved a school wide presentation from the chapter and Officer Steve Klang, a SHS X the TXT pledging activity, and another X the TXT activity at neighboring high school, Union Mine. Posters were displayed around campus and a car parked in a strategic spot on campus was plastered with signs regarding texting and driving. Allstate agents from the Placerville, CA office were invited to attend the event. Officer Klang provided an excellent presentation on teen safety issues at school, at parties, and on the road. A You Tube short film on personal experiences of actual, tragic events that took place due to teen texting and driving was shown. X the TXT pledges were collected during lunchtime. Afterwards, the X the TXT event was continued at Union Mine High School. Over 200 pledges from teens were collected. As one SAVE members expressed, “It felt great; it felt like we were saving lives!”

  • Newcorp at Sacramento Job Corps
    The Sacramento Job Corps SAVE Chapter held a Town Hall meeting on May 2, 2011, where the video "The Last Text" was shown and an X the TXT event took place. Allstate agent Mary Vargas was on hand. Events continued throughout the week with the "Great Hang Up" pledge on May 4 and culminating with a presentation by Chris Cochran from the California Office of Traffic Safety to over 400 students.

  • Maricopa Unified - Maricopa, CA
    The Maricopa Unified SAVE Chapter promoted awareness of the consequences of drinking and driving this Spring. An X the TXT event was also held.

  • Chula Vista High School - Chula Vista, CA
    In 2011, the Chula Vista SAVE Chapter hosted a booth at the school's annual Health Fair. Over 250 students and parents were in attendance. X the TXT was a huge success with 319 students pledging to not text while driving and the thumb-bands became a campus trend. Eye catching posters showing safe driving statistics were displayed on campus.

  • Magnolia Science Academy #4 - Los Angeles, CA
    The Magnolia Science Academy #4 in Los Angeles has a new SAVE Chapter this year. A safe driving assembly that included videos, slide shows, and statistics was held on May 27, 2011 and Allstate agent David Spence was on hand.

  • Cypress High School - Santa Cruz, CA
    The new SAVE Chapter at Cypress High School in Santa Cruz focused on safe driving awareness for teen drivers as well as students of pre-driving age. The Chapter also addressed other school safety topics such as bullying, appropriate use of social networks, and tolerance.

    Local police came to campus to discuss several aspects of safe driving (i.e. speed, not texting, etc.), and the SAVE Chapter also attended a county-wide drug/gang awareness presentation at the county office in early April. Students have presented to the school board about bullying awareness and have written and performed skits at the local elementary school. Also in April they completed a mural that's focused on non-violence in general. A local Allstate agent was invited to graduation in June.

  • Rosie the Riveter Charter High School - Long Beach, CA
    The new SAVE Chapter at Rosie the Riveter Charter High School held an assembly in May 2011 to introduce the Safe Teen Driving program to students. Plans include a summer program and a semester long class in the fall on safety driving as an elective. The curriculum will include courses on Introductory and Community Driving, Congested Area Driving, and Interstate Driving.

  • Granada Hills Charter High School - Granada Hills, CA
    Granada Hills Charter School used its Allstate sponsorship to increase awareness of traffic safety and teens. Students set up a table and presented during a school rally on May 20th. The rally helped to reach all 4000 students on campus with the message that texting kills, and informing students of the local police crackdown on texting while driving. The program also helped to get students free driver's education classes on campus so that all students expecting to drive had access to learning about safe and responsible driving.

  • Santa Teresa High School - San Jose, CA
    The Santa Teresa SAVE Chapter hosted a very successful X the TXT event on May 10, 2011. Allstate agent Eddie Leung was on hand for the event. The program was amazing in reaching teenagers about the danger of texting while driving and the thumb band serves as a reminder of their pledge.

  • Patrick Henry High School - San Diego, CA
    This SAVE Chapter promotes safe prom awareness every year and this year's events were the week of May 16,2011. An automobile that had been wrecked due to driving under the influence was brought onto campus for display. Facts and figures about drinking/texting and driving were displayed around the school. There was an assembly with a presentation by a father who had lost a son in a drunk driving accident and an activity by the California Highway Patrol using a driving course. Students also worked on a pamphlet for distribution.

  • Tulare High School - Teens for Humanity - Tulare, CA
    Tulare High School's Teens for Humanity club participated in a Safe Driving Awareness week in May, 2011. The student body was educated on the dangers of texting and driving with statistics, awareness posters and by participating in an X the TXT event. Over 500 students made the pledge to not text and drive. Local Allstate agents were invited to attend. Texting and driving statistics were displayed in the daily bulletin throughout the week.

    In addition, campus was decorated with chalk reminders about not texting and driving. Students came up with some effective slogans such as, "Friends don't let Friends Text and Drive" and "Real Men/Women Don't Text and Drive." "X the TXT" reminders to were put on all the windshields in the student parking lot. Due to the fact that texting and driving has only been illegal for a short time, many teens do not think twice about texting and driving. The campaign brought awareness to an issue that a vast majority of the community has not really thought about. The THUMB BANDS that the embossed with "TEXTING KILLS" were a significant part of the success of the campaign. It created a "BUZZ" on campus and many students were inquiring about the campaign.

  • Thousand Oaks High School - Thousand Oaks, CA
    Thousand Oaks High School's SAVE Chapter educated students about the hazards of drunk and distracted driving with a Teen Safe Driving campaign in March 2011.

  • Futures High School - North Highlands, CA
    In an effort to increase the awareness of consequences of distracted driving, Futures High School held an X the TXT event in May 2011. Students created A-frame posters displaying statistics to wear during the event. Local law enforcement was on hand to answer questions. An invitation to attend the event was extended to the Baciocco Brothers Allstate Agency.

2009-2010

Through the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE), The Allstate Foundation is sponsoring 5 schools in their efforts to promote youth safety. A $50,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation will allow the SAVE program to be implemented in five schools or community agencies in the San Deigo area and awareness campaigns will be conducted during key times of the year throughout the state.

Participating schools/agencies:

  • Serra High School, San Diego
    The SAVE Chapter at Serra High School (also known as the ELEVATED Student Relations Committee) has been focusing on teambuilding skills and training during the Fall of 2009. The students worked on a coat drive to benefit the Alpha Project of San Diego and won first place in the annual Unity in Action contest organized by the San Diego Regional Hate Crimes Coalition.

    Allstate Agent Involvement: Allstate agents will be invited to the Teen Safe Driving event which is being planned for May 7, 2010.

    The SAVE/ELEVATED chapter held events during Black History Month as well as a Teen Safe Driving rally on May 7, 2010. The rally included speakers from the Allstate Foundation and the signing of the X the TXT banner. Present at the event were Allstate agent, David James, and California Allstate Communications Consultant, Jim Klapthor.

  • Monique Palmer SAVE Chapter, San Diego
    The Monique Palmer SAVE Chapter joined with the City Council and other area high schools to promote safe driving in the months leading up to prom.

For more than 20 years, SAVE, a student-led nonprofit organization headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., has educated and empowered young people in schools and community-based organizations to prevent youth crime and violence. SAVE's efforts engage close to 200,000 student members in schools and communities in 47 states, reducing the potential for violence in K-12 schools and communities by promoting meaningful student involvement, education and service opportunities. "This generous grant from the Allstate Foundation will assist students in finding real solutions to the issues of youth safety that they face each day," stated Dr. Pamela L. Riley, Executive Director of SAVE.
