    Participating schools/agencies:

Montclair High School will promote driving safety through lessons in motor vehicle law and conduct activities that relate to speeding, texting, and talking while driving. Over 1,700 students and faculty attended the event. Also in May, Indigo Nelson, the Chapter President, won the New Jersey Peace Scholarship. Her award was a $1,000 scholarship. • Science Park High School, Newark, NJ
This year Science Park High School SAVE Chapter (Newark, NJ) in conjunction with their school driving instructors will host a "Parents' Night." This will be an educational session for all the school's students who are taking the driving education class and their parents. The session will focus on new changes in the New Jersey State Driving Regulations; especially Kyleigh's Law. The chapter will also conduct youth safety awareness events and activities throughout the school year.

Spring Update: On May 16, Science Park High School had an assembly for all seniors. Faculty discussed driving safety during the prom and at graduation. The senior health teacher also showed a video about drinking and driving in the health classes.

The SAVE advisor plans to have follow up discussions about the prom and refresh the students’ memories about drinking and driving during the graduation period.

The seniors were very impressed by the fact that the faculty cared and were interested in their safety during Prom Week. They appeared to take the message very seriously. The senior health teacher stated that the film on drinking and driving was effective on her students. The assembly and film should have a positive effect on the students. Hopefully, they will be thinking about safety before and after the prom. This can keep the students in the school community safer during the prom and graduation season.

Allstate Agent Involvement: The Science Park High School SAVE Chapter invited with Ms. Celia Caro to attend the Teen Safe Driving Assembly in May.

    2009/2010

Through the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE), The Allstate Foundation is sponsoring 6 schools in New Jersey in their efforts to promote youth safety. A $10,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation will allow the SAVE program to be implemented in six schools or community agencies in New Jersey and awareness campaigns will be conducted during key times of the year throughout the state.

    Participating schools/agencies:

    • Monongahela Middle School, NJ
Monongahela's Peace and Respect Club had a school year full of activities. In the Positive Note Home Program, each teacher selects two students each month they feel have exemplified the behavior all students should aspire to. During Days of Peace & Respect, grade levels are rewarded for a certain numbers of consecutive days with no acts of violence and inappropriate behaviors. Turn Your Back on Violence Day had students wearing their shirts backwards to signify that their school is turning it's back on violence. The Club also took part in a Multple Sclerosis Walk, a coat drive and fundraising for a Haiti Relief Fund

    • Texas Avenue School, NJ
Texas Avenue School's SAVE Chapter had a very busy year. The Breaking Down the Walls of Intolerance project saw students creating a wall of intolerance by creating individual “bricks” with a solution to improving tolerance and understanding written on each one. After several weeks, the wall was “torn down.” The Walk the Talk contest promoted expressions of tolerance, empathy and peaceful solutions to conflict through art, poetry and song. During America’s Safe School Week National SAVE Day was celebrated with purple clothing, purple cake and Keep Your Peace stickers. Mix it Up Day had students getting to know others and sitting at lunch with students they might not have otherwise interacted with. The week ended with Beat the Bullying Blues Day where everyone wore blue and each grade level received a special presentation geared specifically to them. Other activities included sixth annual "Soup or Can" food drive, building leadership skills, and the Shirley Mae Cancer Walk. In May, the SAVE Trial for Cyberbullying will have students prosecuting and defending the use of Facebook, Myspace and texting, and analyzing the impact of these social networks on teen suicide and relationship abuse.

    • Olsen Middle School, NJ
Olsen Middle School's SAVE Chapter had a busy October organizing Red Ribbon Week and NJ School Violence Awareness Week. In April 2010 they held a poster contest, performed skits at local elementary schools and read books on the subjects of conflict resolution, bullying, living in peace with others and preventing violence. Allstate Agent Herb Bewley attended the reception honoring the poster winners and is pictured below with SAVE Advisor, Shelley Schorr.

For more than 20 years, SAVE, a student-led nonprofit organization headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., has educated and empowered young people in schools and community-based organizations to prevent youth crime and violence. SAVE's efforts engage close to 200,000 student members in schools and communities in 47 states, reducing the potential for violence in K-12 schools and communities by promoting meaningful student involvement, education and service opportunities. "This generous grant from the Allstate Foundation will assist students in finding real solutions to the issues of youth safety that they face each day," stated Dr. Pamela L. Riley, Executive Director of SAVE.

New Jersey Allstate Partnership Mid Year Report

    2008/2009

The Allstate Foundation recently presented $8,000 to Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) to support SAVE chapters in elementary, middle and high schools in New Jersey in their efforts to prevent violence.

The SAVE Chapters receiving support include:

    • Immaculata High School, Somerville
    • Abraham Lincoln High School, Jersey City
    • Mahwah High School, Mahwah
    • Monongahela Middle School - Peace & Respect, Sewell
    • Texas Avenue School, Atlantic City
"This generous grant from The Allstate Foundation will assist students in finding real solutions to the issues of violence that they face each day," stated Dr. Pamela L. Riley, Executive Director of SAVE. With support from Allstate agents and employee volunteers, SAVE chapters in New Jersey will be able to provide leadership school-wide to ensure that all students in these schools will be encouraged and empowered with healthy life skills while being engaged in educational activities and opportunities to promote safety. SAVE believes that every student should be able to attend a school that is safe and secure, free of fear and conducive to learning. Through The Allstate Foundation grant, participating SAVE chapters will receive:
      Materials for upcoming activities:
    • America's Safe Schools Week - October 20-24
    • National SAVE Day - October 22
    • National SAVE Rock-A-Thon - October 24
    • printed classroom resource materials including lesson plans and awareness brochures, affiliate chapter certification and membership cards, access to restricted site information via the National SAVE Web site, which includes the most up-to-date information and direct technical assistance.
    • special recognition opportunities, including highlights on SAVE members, advisors and chapters.
    • ongoing updates on cutting-edge research on such topics as bullying, harassment and intimidation will be provided in schools.
    • eligibility to apply for SAVE mini grants for local school safety activities.
The role of SAVE is becoming increasingly more important as crime and violence in our schools continues to erode the teaching and learning process. For the 2007-2008 school year, sixteen school associated violent deaths occurred nationwide. (National School Safety and Security Services, 2008). It is an extremely scary and unsettling situation for students, parents, and community members alike.

"The Allstate Foundation recognizes the importance of enabling youth to reduce violence in their schools and create a more positive educational atmosphere," said James Griffin with The Allstate Foundation in New Jersey. "Teaching conflict resolution skills to children and teens is essential to the overall quality of life for young people. SAVE is exemplary of the type of non-profit organization that provides the proper direction to the students involved in their program, and we are glad The Allstate Foundation can partner with them to help build safe and vital communities."
