dangerous and how to help others. Members created signs to advertise No Bullying/No
Harassment Awareness during Safe School Week. Stickers were handed out with the slogan, “Be the Change, Don’t be a Bully”.
Students gathered at the October 27 meeting to decorate paper bags for Halloween with greetings from the SAVE/SADD Club.
More than 50 treat-filled bags were delivered to the InterAct Women’s Shelter for the children during
their Trunk-Or-Treat activity.
On November 3, the Chapter worked with the NC State Highway Patrol and Garner Police Department to present the Anti-Texting while
Driving Program. The local Garner Police Department and SROs assisted. The program targeted the ninth and tenth graders
that are the rising driving class. A group of students were able to attempt to drive a golf cart through a cone course
and text to other students at the same time. Other students were able to view the activity as it occurred. This event
was held through all 4 blocks of the school day with attendance of over 400 students participating. Of the 400 there were
50 who were able to drive and experience the difficulty of texting and driving. After the driving portion, each block

- Cuthbertson High School - Waxhaw, NC
Cuthbertson's SAVE Chapter plans to hold promise pledges during prom month and have a wrecked car on campus. Guest speakers, including one from Allstate, will be invited to speak to the
student body. During meetings throughout the year, Allstate video clips will be shown. The SAVE Chapter advisor at Cuthbertson High School is
Leah Ross.
FALL UPDATE:
During the 2011-2012 school year the Cuthbertson SAVE Chapter has raised over 600 dollars to donate to local domestic
abuse charities as well as suicide prevention clinics. They sponsored our high school’s first international peace day as
well as charity soccer games to get the entire community involved. Each month this chapter brings in a guest speaker
to talk to our chapter about the “big picture” of what we’re doing and how we can follow our positive influences into the
work force. Consistently throughout the school year the SAVE chapter is creating posters, pledges, and other handouts to educate
the student body and the upcoming generation. The chapter’s goal is to essentially create positive habits for the future
community and teach everyone healthy habits.
COMING UP: April is solely dedicated to Safe Driving. During the month of April they will create student pledges called
"PROMise Pledges." This pledge states that the student will be a good friend and neighbor by not drinking and driving on
prom night or any other night. They will make a giant quilt with the pledges and hang it on the school wall in the cafeteria.
This shows students that it is “cool” to be a good friend and everyone is going to be a safe driver, especially on prom
night. Also in April, the high school provides a guest speaker to talk to all the students who can drive.
The speaker informs the students about the effects of drunk driving, texting while driving, and careless driving.
The high school can relate to this because last year a freshman at our school was killed in a car accident. Every year they
bring a totaled car onto campus as a reminder that this is what can happen if you get careless or make a bad decision.
Lastly, an All-State member will be invited to speak to parents about the
importance of encouraging safe driving to their teens. The month of April is filled with pledges, guest speakers, parent meetings, and much more.

as a personal project. The club members also handed out buttons and sold $5 t-shirts
that said "Silence the Violence." On March 24, SAVE members and other students
signed up for a "day of silence" to show their solidarity for nonviolence. They
wore their "Silence the Violence" t-shirts and/or bumper stickers on their shirts
that proclaimed "no means no," "get the violence out of our schools," and "stop
the violence" and none of them spoke throughout that day.
GMHS SAVE worked with the NC State Highway Patrol and their Anti-Texting while Driving
Program again on May 3, as they had back in the fall, and their local Garner Police
Department and SRO's assisted. The program targeted the second half of their
ninth and tenth graders. A group of students were able to attempt to drive a golf
cart through a cone course while texting other students at the same time.
The chapter had purchased thumb bands that say "r u drvng?" on them, and distributed
them on May 3rd and 11th along with a "But it's not going to happen to my friends"
pledge card that the students had to get signed by their friends (passing on the
message), and then return. The cards were later posted in the main lobby for all
to see.
On May 9th, VIP for a VIP (Vehicle Injury Prevention for a Very Important Person)
was presented to GMHS Juniors and Seniors (approximately 950-1000 recipients).
Chapter members sat at the tables where prom tickets were being given out and got
those who came to get their tickets to sign a pledge to stay safe and sober on
prom night. After signing the pledge, the students were given a rubber bracelet
with the work "THINK" on it. There had been "THINK" posters spread across campus
starting in the last two weeks of April. Then, in May, the chapter posted additional
posters that say "Party Safe, Party Sober - Prom May 14" and "Choices and Consequences -
Prom May 14," to associate the message with "THINK."
