THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SAVE
GRANTS SPONSORED BY THE ALLSTATE FOUNDATION - SOUTHEAST REGION

The National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) is proud to partner with the Allstate Foundation in the Southeast Region to support the youth safety efforts of students through their SAVE Chapters.

Established in 1952, The Allstate Foundation is an independent, charitable organization made possible by subsidiaries of The Allstate Corporation (NYSE: ALL). Allstate and The Allstate Foundation sponsor community initiatives to promote safe and vital communities; tolerance; inclusion, and diversity; and economic empowerment. The Allstate Foundation believes in the financial potential of every individual and in helping America's families achieve their American dream. Additional information on the Allstate Foundation can reviewed at www.allstate.com/foundation.

2010-2011

National SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) in partnership with The Allstate Foundation are sponsoring 15 schools and chapters in the Southeast Region (specific regions will be determined at a later date) in an effort to promote teen driver safety awareness in America's youth. A $35,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation will allow National SAVE and The Allstate Foundation's Teen Safe Driving program to be implemented in selected schools, chapters, community agencies or related programs. Emphasis is to be placed on the hazards of texting and driving, cellphone related accidents and other dangers facing Generation Z's youth.

2009/2010

Through the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE), The Allstate Foundation is sponsoring 8 schools in the Southeast in their efforts to promote youth safety.A $35,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation will allow the SAVE program to be implemented in eight schools or community agencies in the Southeast and awareness campaigns will be conducted during key times of the year throughout the state. The Allstate Foundation is also partnering with SAVE through this grant to host the 20th Anniversary National SAVE Youth Summit.

Participating schools/agencies:

  • Laney High School, Wilmington, NC
Our main goal will be to spread awareness of teen safe driving issues. We will have activities during the Back to School events of America's Safe Schools Week and National Youth Traffic Safety Month. The students at Laney High School will also be working with elementary school students at the local Boys & Girls Club.

Update: During America’s Safe Schools Week, we held a National SAVE Day Teen Safe Driving Event in our parking lot where we surveyed 190 drivers. We found out that only 39% of those we surveyed got 8 or more hours of sleep per night. Also, only 28% of them never use their cell phone while driving, only 16% drive without passengers in their car, and 85% always wear their seat belts. From this information, we are creating public service announcements and flyers that will be used school wide. We have a team of people working on these right now to be used right after the winter break. As for measurable results related to Teen Driver Safety issues, we will most likely see the greatest impact when we do our post-survey in the spring. This will come after our push to help people sleep more, not use their cell phones in the car, and decrease distractions by limiting the number of passengers. In the spring, we will be focusing on Teen Driver Safety activities including the campaigns to promote adequate sleep, no cell phone usage while driving, and decreasing distractions by limiting the number of passengers in the car. We have also made preliminary plans to have a mock crash around prom time to get more people involved in making smart decisions about safe driving (date to be determined).

End-of-the-Year Update: As for Teen Safe Driving events, we have completed the following. To kick off National Teen Driver Safety Month, we partnered with the Crossroads Drug Prevention Club, the Sports Entertainment Marketing Class and the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Agency to sponsor a Teen Driver Safety and Alcohol Awareness Day on April 29. Junior and Senior classes were invited to participate in the Keys to Life presentation which was followed by a Mock Crash outside. During lunch, there was a Drug Information Booth specifically on alcohol. After school, there was a Student-Faculty basketball game in which all of the proceeds were donated to DARE to decrease wreckless drinking and driving. We also surveyed students who have participated in our Teen Driver Safety events to see if our messages have impacted teen drivers.

Overall, we know those we have worked with have experienced joy and have greater knowledge about alternatives to violence and the benefits of having peaceful communities. We have trained 20 new mediators throughout the year who now advocate and share conflict resolution methods with their peers. We have completed 48 mediations this year so far and have, in turn, stopped these conflicts from becoming violent. As for measurable results related to Teen Driver Safety issues, we will most likely see the greatest impact when we do our post-survey in the spring. This will come after our push to help people sleep more, not use their cell phones in the car, and decrease distractions by limiting the number of passengers. We found out that after our efforts, 61% of drivers got 7 or more hours of sleep per night. Also, 59% of these students used their cell phone only 20% or less while driving, while 65% drive with 1 or less passengers in their car, and 93% always wear their seat belts. This is an increase on all measures!!!

  • Highland School of Technology, Gastonia, NC
Our chapter will focus on a three part program. During the opening weeks of school, we will have grade level meetings emphasizing safe driving on and off campus. Part two will be Safe Schools week with a SAVE/Teen Safe Driving Rally for the entire student body. In May for prom, we will design safety brochures and partner this activity with the Prom Promise Campaign.

Update:We hosted a SAVE rally on October 14, 2009. Our SAVE chapter partnered with our advanced theater arts classes to produce a video recreating the Alex Orange story, using students at our school. All students attended the rally. We also had students to sign an “I Believe” poster during lunches for this week. They signed their name and short belief statements. Our SAVE members attended the National SAVE Youth Summit in Charlotte, NC. Students presented statistics and Teen Safe Driving tips in conjunction with our Red Ribbon Week message. Approximately 150 juniors and seniors took part in a texting and driving presentation by our local police officers on November 17, 2009. The students drove a golf cart, then drove the same course while texting to see how many cones they knocked down. The students were also shown a graphic video with an accident scenario showing the physical injuries and death that may result from texting and diving. The students reacted very positively to the SAVE rally. Our administration was very complimentary of our club’s efforts to promote thoughtful decision-making by our students including conflict resolution, saying “No” to alcohol and drugs, and driving safety. The juniors and seniors who participated in the texting and driving activity with the local policemen were surprised at how much their driving skills were influenced by the distraction of texting. They were also visibly emotional at the serious accident scenario presented in the video.

  • Harding University High School, Charlotte, NC
At Harding University High School our chapter will work in partnership with local middle schools to focus on driving safety. We will do more community service as a way to bring the message into our community.

Update: Harding University High School is working on several events for this academic year. We participated in the Safe Driving Event in Charlotte in September and the SAVE Peace Garden Ceremony. We conducted a memorial ceremony and released balloons to commemorate the tragic death of Travis Davis, a football player killed by violence. The SAVE Chapter attended the National SAVE Youth Summit hosted by Allstate and SAVE at West Charlotte High School and participated in a Bullying Prevention Training Program. All of these events and more are due to the generosity of Allstate.

In May, before Prom, we made copies of Oprah's NO PHONE ZONE pledge and placed them in the cafeteria to encourage studetns not to talk on the cell phone while driving. We also created safe driving posters and placed them in the cafeteria and hallways.

  • Northwest Guilford High School, Greensboro, NC
With this mini-grant we hope to particpate in the R U Buckled program, hand posters, make shirts, and have an assembly at our school for the Junior and Senior students.

Update: Our club had the most fun participating in R U Buckled this past semester. We ordered key chain-flashlights that remind students to buckle up! We also put together candy with messages on them. For example: Smarties that say “Be a smartie, wear your seatbelt.” We handed these items out in the parking lot at school. We held this event twice last semester. We have also posted messages on our TV announcements with teen driving statistics. We have noticed many teens in our school using the key chains that we passed out. We have also encountered students that stop specifically to tell our members that they are remembering their seat belts. Also, our club members have reported that they are now more apt to tell their friends to wear seat belts. This semester our SAVE chapter will be holding many safe teen driving events. We will be having a Grim Reaper day in which our members wear all black with driving error statistics on their shirts. We will represent victims to driving error. Also, we will be having a crash car outside of our school near the time of our Prom to warn students of the dangers of drunk driving. We are also hoping to have an assembly/rally on safe teen driving. Lastly, we will be having our SAVE Rock-a-thon centered around safe teen driving.

  • Garner High School, Garner, NC
The students at Garner High School will be sponsoring 2 events (fall & spring) which revolve around driving safety and responsibly for our teens. We will do a prom event in May which will concentrate on alcohol/drug free driving and an after-party celebration drive.

Update: Our SAVE Chapter worked with the “Keep the Drive” event sponsored by Allstate Foundation in which we had 45-50 students attend after school. A well received event by the students and staff. Through the Trojan Vision announcements, we relayed for a week, information regarding safe driving tips. In conjunction with this the club members created “Safety Turkeys” that were placed throughout the school before Thanksgiving holidays. They created the turkeys with helpful driving hints on how to stay safe in the car as a driver AND as a passenger. In addition we have SAVE posters strategically posted within the school for students to see regarding safe driving. For the spring semester our big event will be for a Safe Prom and Graduation … we will distribute information during the week of Prom and get students to sign pledges to be sober and safe for the event. Also, we hand out pencils and rubber bracelets as reminders. This year, we want to have an event held in conjunction with the Garner Police department that helps educate students about drunk driving and safe driving. Also, we want to be able to reach more students with the promo items we hand out. The funding will assist greatly with this. We want to hold a safe driving poster competition within the school and be able to award prizes to the best poster(s) with the population and have them displayed in the main lobby of the school.

Before spring break we worked on the Safe Driving Campaitn were the topis was drunk driving and safe driving. We had the Garner Traffic Unit officers come out and worked with the kids so that they could see the impact of drving impaired by driving a golf cart with fatal vision goggles. Aslo, we had the Convincer on site that day for students to see the value of wearing a seat belt. During the week we had an announcement a day on statistics to educate the students. Prom Promise - we used the nationwide theme of THINK and we started in the middle of April by putting up posters that just said THINK. Then at the beginning of May we switched the posters and put up new ones that said "THINK, party safe - party sober". Then the week before prom we had tables set out to get the students attending Prom to sign pledges - their Prom Promise to stay safe and sober during Prom weekend. We handed out rubber band bracelets with THINK printed on them. All the pledges were posted in the lobby along with THINK posters for all to see. Also during the announcements, we ran a music video that depicted a car accident in which the teen driver was drinking and hit an oncoming car killing the other teen. The lyrics were very impactful and the video showed how the families were impacted andthe end result of the driver going to jail. Many, many teens were impacted by the video shown this week. Allstate representatives from te Keep the Drive event worked with our students to put on a safe driving rally at the school.

  • Chapel Hill High School, Chapel Hill, NC
Our chapter will host a Mock Car Crash in May of 2010 to concide with the Junior/Senior Prom. The event will include an assembly with speakers representing local law endorcement officials, medical personnel, and others directly involved or impacted by the effects of drunk or drugged driving. The "victims" will be portrayed by club members with emergency response personnel performing their roles. The event will culminate with the UNC Air Care helicopter landing and evacuating the "victims". The event will be performed for all Juniors and Seniors at the school.

Update: This spring we spent a great deal of time and work planning and implementing our school’s Mock Crash. This consists of an assembly with 3 speakers from Emergency Medicine, Law Enforcement and the Court System talking about the consequences of dangerous decisions. These include drinking/drugging and driving, texting/cell phone use and driving, too many passengers/distractions and other poor decisions that students may make while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The program then moves to the crash reenactment which is held in our stadium. The “crash” has 2 cars with “victims” in them and starts with a 911 call and proceeds with all of the emergency vehicles responding in real time. The agencies involved include our local police department, sheriff’s department, state highway patrol, fire departments from 2 communities, local EMS and 911 call center personnel and UNC Air Care Life Flight.

  • Farmville Central High School, Farmville, NC
The Farmville High School SAVE Chapter will hose a mock crash scene for prospective drivers education students to increase safe driving awareness.

Update: Farmville Central High School is still in the planning stage for our mock crash scene for prospective drivers’ education students to increase their driver awareness.

  • Sun Valley High School, Monroe, NC
We will be promoting a bully-Free environment this year through various activities. Our main project will be a "Vehicle Impact Program" presentation spring semester where our junior and senior students will be shown the effect of a car accident due to drunk driving.

Update: We will be having our School Resource Officer organize in the spring semester, a Vehicle Impact Program that will show the dangers of being in a car accident, and encourage students to make good driving decisions.

  • Weddington High School, Matthews, NC
Our chaper will focus on positive decision making; think before drinking and driving - make the correct decision before getting in a car.

Update: Weddington High School SAVE Chapter is a brand new Chapter and as such we are still very much in the planning stages for our Safe Teen Driving activities. The core group of student leaders has been established and the campaign to interest more members is underway. The leader council has been planning events to enforce the message of Safe Teen Driving. We are working with the other clubs in the school with similar missions to make a collected impact on our school. One goal the leadership council would like to explore is the involvement of the middle and elementary schools which are part of our school cluster – guided by the belief that safe driving starts early with seat belt training.

  • West Charlotte High School, Charlotte, NC
We will focus on two main activities: the SAVE Chapter member will visit the local jail to meet with teens/young adults who made errors in judgement and are violent offenders. Our chapter will sponsor a community walk combined with a candle-light vigil for victims of violent crime and drunk driving.

Update:Our SAVE Chapter has become quite popular across campus. Into December, students were still asking to join. SAVE has been recognized by the following media outlets: The Charlotte Observer, CMS News, local television stations, Power 98 Radio Station and the Charlotte Post. As part of our Safe Teen Driving activities, we announced safe-driving facts during the week of 11-30-09 during the school’s morning announcements. For example: “Today’s fact is: fifty-six percent of teen drivers said they use their cell phones while driving. Don’t be tempted to use your cell phone while driving. Pull over to make a call and wait until you’re at home to text. No message is important enough to end your life!”

The role of SAVE is becoming increasingly more important as crime and violence in our schools continues to erode the teaching and learning process Already this school year, the school shooting in Cleveland has brought school violence to the forefront again. For the 2006-2007 school year, thirty-two school associated violent deaths occurred nationwide. (National School Safety and Security Services, 2007). It is an extremely scary and unsettling situation for students, parents, and community members alike.

"At Allstate, we feel that community support is a very important extension of our corporate values and business goals," said Julianna Sparks, of the Allstate Foundation. "Teaching conflict resolution skills to children and teens is essential to the overall quality of life for young people. SAVE is exemplary of the type of non-profit organization that provides the proper direction to the students involved in their program, and we are glad The Allstate Foundation can partner with them to help build safe and vital communities."
