2010-2011

National SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) in partnership with The Allstate Foundation are sponsoring schools and chapters in the Southwest Region in an effort to promote teen driver safety awareness in America's youth. A $20,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation will allow National SAVE and The Allstate Foundation's Teen Safe Driving program to be implemented in selected schools, chapters, community agencies or related programs. Emphasis is to be placed on the hazards of texting and driving, cellphone related accidents and other dangers facing Generation Z's youth.

  • Students Against Violence Everywhere Receives $20,000 Grant from The Allstate Foundation to Promote Teen Safe Driving in the Southwest Region ~ August 23, 2010

    Participating schools/agencies:

    • Highland High School, Albuquerque, NM
The Highland High School SAVE Chapter (Albuquerque, NM) is conducting numerous student-directed projects during the 2010-2011 academic year. They will host a Safety Pledge in October. The chapter is coordinating a Toy and stuffed animal drive for the battered womens' shelter in November and December. Students will participate in a field trip in January to Santa Fe to see how legislative bills are passed and how to advocate for non-violence. In March they will set up a non-violence exhibition table at the Spring Fling and they will plan and host a Safe Teen Driving Assembly in April.

Update: Highland High School's SAVE Chapter's Gun Pledge (pledging not to bring guns onto campus or carry one off campus) in October went well - over 1,000 signatures were obtained and 8 new members were recruited. The Toy and Stuffed Animal Drive for the battered women's shelter was successful as 4 large bags of toys were donated. The skits for the middle school presentations are in process - 65 students will participate in the skits which will be presented to two middle schools. The Safe Teen Driving Assembly is scheduled for April - committees and speaking parts are being assigned.

Spring Update: The Highland High School SAVE Chapter had a most successful school-wide assembly. The assembly combined with a promise of not to drink and drive, had SYDNEY (a go-cart that shows students the effects of driving drunk through a computer connnectd to the steering and motor), and drunk goggles. The assembly was very effective as the assemblies are normally loud however a pin drop would have been heard during the assembly. As a result, there was a record number of promises and there weren't any incidents at the Prom this year. The faculty and staff were impressed with the assembly and the strength of the message.

They will help raise awareness through a billboard and banner and they will have a proclamation in May for National Youth Traffic Safety Month. The chapter will invite the Mayor and the Police Chief to present the proclamation. The students will plan and conduct several teen safe driving and youth safety activities throughout the school year.

Update: During November the Sallisaw Youth Coalition participated in the "Rock-A-Thon" to raise money for the "Help in Crisis" program which provides help for family members enduring violence in their homes. Bullying will be the topic of conversation when the Coalition presents a puppet show to local kindergarten through 2nd grade students from February through April. In April and May, we are focusing on alcohol awareness in the home and teen safe driving.

Spring Update: The Sallisaw Youth Coalition concentrated most of their efforts in May 2011(National Youth Traffic Safety Month). The Chapter placed safety banners throughout the school; created chalk drawings on sidewalks in local parks; designed t-shirts using the colors orange and yellow (for traffic safety); distributed key chains at the school gates to remind students not to text and drive, produced and uploaded video to schooltube regarding driving safety and wrote a letter to the editor of the local paper.

CHAPTER HIGHLIGHT: Sallisaw High School featured in e-Source, October 2010

    • Mojave High School, North Las Vegas, NV
This year the school is embarking on a fantastic voyage to transform the school. The number one goal is to provide a safe, positive, and caring learning community that is conducive to academic success. Mojave High School would like to have the SAVE Chapter promote the ideals that SAVE stands for so that there is a decrease in bullying and an increase in positive interactions on campus and the city streets. However, the school wants to involve the community so that the community can see the difference a decrease in violence can make. Mojave High School will be targeting aggressive and drunk driving, dating violence, suicide prevention, gangs, and bullying.

Update: Mojave High School had several SAVE and Teen Safe Driving events in the fall of 2010. For Teen Safe Driving, a town hall meeting was held at UNLY to discuss teen driver issues. SAVE and the Safe Community Partnership hosted a lunch activity at Mojave High School. From October 11th through the 15th, SAVE Chapter members broadcasted safe driving tips to the student body. On October 16th in Pina Plaza, a Candlelight Memorial was held for teens killed in car crashes.

Spring Update: During February 2011, the SAVE students invited a parent whose daughter lost her life in traffic accident to have lunch with the students of Mojave High School. The parent handed out information regarding the importance of wearing seat belts, t-shirts, stickers, and pencils. 500 students signed a pledge to wear their seat belts when in a vehicle.

SAVE students participated in a drivers' education competition that encouraged teenagers to enhance their skills, abilities, knowledge and experience behind the wheel. Also, a SAVE student created a video (The Walks of Life) to promote teen safe driving that was shown to Mojave drivers education classes and the information they received at PACE was also shared with the student body.

Mojave SAVE students participated in the "Every 15 Minutes" program; it ran for two days and the program involved a staged fatal traffic collision involving drinking and driving with all the accompanying public safety, medical response, Public Safety Officials, Helath Care Professionals, local business leaders, parents and the community participating.

The Cheyenne High School SAVE Club will conduct a poster and awareness campaign to help make our students more aware of dangerous driving practices. CHS SAVE will make safe driving commercials for our daily announcements at school to further broaden awareness for safe driving on prom and graduation nights.

Spring Update: The Cheyenne SAVE Club conducted a multi-awareness campaign for the spring semester. Not only did the club create a poster and information campaign for anti-drug abuse/anti-alcohol abuse, there was a daily airing of information on the morning announcements. The anti-bullying campaign had students wearing signs around their necks providing information on where and how students can get help if they are bullied. There was a school wide spirit week complete with the first SAVE carnival. There were games, rides and information about safe driving and anti-fighting. In coordination with prom and safe driving week, the students created a video skit about what can happen if a student isn't careful when driving. The school has a broadcast tv system so the skit will air daily prior to prom.

    • Rockwell Charter High School, Eagle Mountain, UT
Our SAVE Chapter members are creating a presentation to provide students about safe driving during National Safe Driving Month. A bulletin board for the school will also be designed and created to promote safe driving and violence prevention. To enhance the message of safe driving, chapter members will have games, treats and giveaways while providing useful and helpful information to students.

Spring 2011: The Rockwell Charter High School SAVE Chapter planned and designed 2 bulletin board designs promoting safe driving to display prominantly in the hallways during the month of May and during graduation week. The first bulletin board was an X the Text bulletin board, and the second was a campaign designed by the students called "Don't Drive Like an Angry Bird" utilizing the popular Angry Birds game. The students plan to play a jeopardy game with the students with the 5 categories being drowsy driving, drunk driving, distracted driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and speeding. Students will sign pledges to drive safely and there will be prizes for the games and pledges. They will also be showing a safe driving video. In addition, a table will be set up at the stop sign at the exit of the school parking lot on May 20 and award smarties to students and parents who are wearing their seat belts and dummies to students and parents who are not.

The students have had a lot of fun planning these activities. The Angry Birds bulletin board was very successful and has caught the attention of most of the students and faculty members. There were many discussions surrounding the X the Text bulletin board as well, and many of the students have expressed to the SAVE chapter that they will not text and drive. It has been very beneficial to bring these issues to the student body, and the social attitudes and positive pressure to drive safely has made a huge impact. Many of the parents have commented about how discussions about safe driving have been brought up at home, school events, and extracurricular events.

  • The Allstate Foundation Awards $46,500 to Nevada Community Organizations in 2009 ~ (12/07/09)

    Participating schools/agencies:

    • Chandler High School, Chandler, OK
The SAVE Chapter at Chandler High School is focusing on Texting While Driving Campaign. In order to do this we will create informational posters on Texting and distritute them to our schoolmates, particularly juniors and seniors. We will participate in an educational workshop during Spring Teen Forum.

Update: Our members designed, created and hung informational posters on violence prevention, road rage, texting, and alcohol. We participated in an educational workshop during Spring Teen Forum. We planned a driving demonstration using cones and cars which focused on the hazards of texting while driving.

    • Highland High School, Albuquerque, NM
Our chapter will plan student-directed projects promoting teen safety including teen driver safety throughout the school year. We will use parent/student fact sheets and announcements to promote the campaign.

Update: During America’s Safe Schools Week in October we set up information booths and passed our facts and statistics on teen safety while driving. We set up another information booth in April’s Spring Fling and invited other groups that are involved in safe teen driving (MADD, State Police, local law enforcement, Allstate agents) to accompany us. In May, prior to Prom, we passed out more information and statistics via the National Youth Traffic Safety Month presentation at our school.

    • Coronado High School, Henderson, NV
The students at Coronado will use the issues of teen driving as well as teen violence and drunk driving in order to educate our fellow students. We will encourage them to work together with us as a team to educate others about violence and the dangers of drunk driving.

    • Southeast Career Technical Academy, Las Vegas, NV
We have an extremely high number of teen driving related deaths each year, some related to acohol, some to speed and carelessness. We want to educate not only the juniors and seniors in our school, but we want to go and visit elementary and middle schools to teach younger kids about being safe in a car.

Update: The Friday before prom, during morning announcements, SAVE members reminded students and staff of the dangers of drinking and driving by reading a poem about a girl killed by a drunk driver. Every morning in the month of May, during announcements, statistics regarding teen drivers were read. The Friday before Memorial Day, ribbons were put on every locker in the school. Two lockers would have a purple ribbon and one locker would have an orange ribbon. This was done to represent the statistic from the CDC that one in every three deaths in persons age 16-19 is caused by a motor vehicle crash. Again, our chapter was negligent in involving an Allstate agent in our activities. As of the writing of this report. A letter is being drafted by our members to two local agents informing them of our upcoming ribbon campaign for the lockers and of our participation in Relay for Life. Should I be fortunate enough to be the SAVE advisor for next year, this will be one of my primary goals.

    • Sallisaw Youth Coalition, Sallisaw, OK
We will be working with our local Police Department to hand out safety materials especially in the areas of responsible cell phone/texting usage and "NO" to drinking and driving. We will continue our planned activities for May, such as prom, and encourage our youths to use common sense as they drive.

Update:Sallisaw Youth Coalition produced a video "Message Sent" about texting and driving. Our video was selected as one of the 20 finest in the nation and is up for a $10,000 top prize. We created a half page color advertisement and ran it the local paper. In addition, we instituted the "GATE BLITZ" which is where we stopped all the cars leaving our High School on May 7th and gave them a bumper sticker that read "DNT TXT ND DRV".
