FALL / WINTER UPDATE:
Fourteen SEHS FCCLA / SAVE Chapter members attended the Region XVII Youth SUMMIT
(Students United to Make Meaningful Influences Today) on January 26. They heard
speakers who addressed various topics including driving safety and violence
prevention. They led a break-out session on domestic violence with the
help of Women's protective Services. They also arranged to have the same texting
simulator that they hosted at their school. The program allowed students to experience
the effects of texting and driving with the use of a computer program and real car,
without actually texting and driving. They also organized a drunk and distracted
driving simulation with other students which involved first responders
and showed what really happens "on the scene." Each presentation was shared with
approximately 500 other students and advisors from throughout the Texas South
Plains. SEHS will be in charge of organizing all presenters for the 2012
Region SUMMIT. Allstate Agents Alan Newton and Henry Insurance Agency were invited
to attend SEHS's events (SUMMIT, texting simulator).
With the help of their school's DARE officer, a FCCLA / SAVE member presented a
safe driving workshop for all 6-12th graders. The workshop shared the dangers of
distracted driving, explained the laws for drivers regarding distracted driving,
allowed students to complete a distracted driving obstacle course, and encouraged
participants to "sign" a pledge to keep their hands on the wheel by dipping their
hands in paint and placing them on a giant steering wheel. The pledge still hangs
in the high school hallway as a daily reminder to students.
SPRING UPDATE:
In conjunction with the Remember Alex Brown Foundation (Alex Brown was a victim
of texting while driving), students were invited to go online to sign a
"No Texting While Driving" pledge on the Foundation's website.
Computers were set up in the cafeteria to allow students to log on during lunch.
In addition, a video was looped of the song "'Til U Got Home," written in memory
of Alex Brown. Flyers sharing the dangers of texting and driving were also hung
on every locker and placed on every car. A "Drive NW TXT L8R" sign was created
using cups on the fence outside of the school football field. The message is seen
by all students and parents who drive to school each day.
SEHS FCCLA / SAVE is creating 4'x4' signs with messages regarding the dangers of
distracted driving and posting them throughout the community. Announcements and
flyers will be shared during the week leading up to Prom (May 7), reminding
students about the Texas Zero Tolerance law when it comes to drinking and driving.
The chapter is working on organizing and carrying out "Shattered Dreams",
a distracted and drunk driving program, at their school this upcoming October 2011.
They are also working on arranging all speakers (keynote and break-out) for SUMMIT
2012 (January), including multiple speakers addressing violence and dafe driving
practices.
FALL UPDATE:
The Ira High School SAVE Chapter participated in a recycling project that they
got their 5th graders involved in; togther they collected just over 600lbs of
cans, raising $90.00. The chapter also participated in Adopt a Highway and
held a pickup on a Saturday afternoon. They gathered 21 bags of trash in just two
hours of cleaning up the two mile stretch of highway for which they are responsible.
Ira continues to participate in Meals on Wheels, delivering food to the elderly
at least once a month.
WINTER UPDATE:
Ira started off the holiday season with a Coat Drive in their school and community
to collect unused coats and jackets for the homeless and needy. Over 150 coats
were donated. The chapter gave half of the coats to the Gateway Family
Violence Home and the other half to the local homeless shelter. They continued
the can drive they had started in the fall with the 5th graders and collected over
2,000 lbs of cans, raising over $600.00. They bought Christmas gifts for a couple
of children and their mother at the local Battered Women and Children's shelter
with the funds raised.
SPRING UPDATE:
Ira High SAVE hosted the West Texas SAVE Summit on Friday, March 25, 2011, where
other area high schools came to learn more about the organization and how to
organize a chapter at their school. The event was sponsored in part by the grant
from the Allstate Foundation. National SAVE Youth Advisory Board (YAB) members
Candy Gonzalez, Ira senior and YAB secretary, J.P. Wilson, and Shadezja Garrett
presented. The National Association of SAVE’s executive director, Carleen Wray,
was the keynote speaker and lead the event’s activities along with Ira SAVE
Chapter advisor Katrina Reynolds. Activities included ice breakers that allowed
attending students to get to know each other. They learned what SAVE is, how they
can make a difference, and how to start their own chapter. During group sessions,
summit attendees broke into smaller groups, lead by Ira SAVE members, and
discussed leadership, awareness, communication, empowerment and engagement.

SPRING UPDATE:
VRHS RADD/SAVE promoted the Click it or Ticket campaign, a project that
helped to enforce teens buckling their seat belts, and their chapter signed a
banner committing to doing just that; this was done through TXDOT.
The chapter sponsored fall and spring on-campus lock-ins where they stressed the
importance of safe driving and being drug and alcohol-free. They showed their
2010 Shattered Dreams video and talked about the devastation that driving drunk
can cause. VRHS RADD/SAVE has found that lock-ins also help to show students that
there are better alternatives to partying on the weekends and that you can have
fun without drinking. They do this by conducting big group activities that show
students how much fun being safe can actually be.
The VRHS RADD/SAVE Chapter will continue to hold their bi-weekly meetings for the
rest of this school year. Upcoming plans for next year include fall and spring
lock-ins, where they will, again, talk about safe driving and being drug free.
They will also hold a Shattered Dreams production in March. Addtional plans are
in the works for many other events that will engage their student body and
ultimately make their peers safer on the road and living drug and alcohol-free
lives.
- Ross Shaw Sterling Sr. High School - Houston, TX
The Ross Shaw Sterling Sr. High School SAVE Chapter’s plans for Teen Safe Driving
activities include holding a Teen Safe Driving Poster contest. They will also
sponsor a “mini” pep rally for the senior class, during which, students will
perform a rap they composed concerning how to avoid risky behavior and unsafe
driving. The chapter will have students give one safe driving suggestion over
the PA system each morning and listeners will record and submit them at the end
of the week; a prize will be awarded to the student with the most correct responses
submitted. The SAVE Chapter advisor at Ross Shaw Sterling Sr. High School is
Dr. Chandra Richardson.

Chapter members decorated the school halls with statistics and posters depicting
the dangers that teens face on the road. They held a texting and driving assembly
on May 3rd which consisted of two videos chosen by the chapter. Each member stood
among his/her peers and talked about the dangers of texting and driving.
After the assembly, the SAVE students signed a no texting while driving pledge
and put it in the school hallway. As the day progressed, other students on campus
signed the pledge as well. Also following the assembly, the chapter conducted an
activity called "The Living Dead" where members randomly chose one of their peers
every twenty minutes to represent a person who died due to texting while driving.
They ended the school day with a total of eleven "Living Dead." The last activity
was placing carnations on the students' and teachers' cars to remind them to
drive safely.

SPRING UPDATE:
Students from Hermleigh High School attended the West Texas SAVE Summit at Ira
High school in March. After learning about the history and values of SAVE, they
became motivated to begin thier own chapter at Hermleigh in April. The ideas
sparked from the summit initiated their first project. Upon learning that May is
National Youth Traffic Safety Month, the students will hold a middle/high school
assembly on May 20th to educate and empower others with Teen Safe Driving skills
and youth safety strategies. The presentation will include activities, door prizes,
skits, a video, a chain of life, and a safe driving pledge to sign. Topics include
distracted driving, drinking and driving, texting and driving, and encouraging
passengers to speak up when they feel a driver is putting their life in danger.
Upon conclusion of the safe driving presentation, the chapter will introduce SAVE
by showing the introductory video and SAVE members will be available for questions
thereafter. Allstate Agent Doug Townsend was invited to attend.
- Sunnyside High School - Houston, TX
Sunnyside High School''>s peer counselors led several social awareness activities geared toward teen safety, driving safety and violence
prevention at the school. The third week in November, SHS had a social awareness week in which the peer counselors will promote teen safety and
violence prevention by posting statistics, quotes, poems and artwork around campus related to teen safety and driving safety. During the monthly
parent meeting on November 15, SHS distributed a factsheet about driving safety to parents. As part of this social awareness week, on November
14 and 15, the school hosted an "X the Text" Event. During this event, students, faculty and parents placed ink on their thumbs and then placed
their thumbprints on an "X the Text" banner as a promise not to text and drive. All participants received a thumb band acknowledging their participation.
Mr. Joseph Simeon, the local Allstate agent, attended and participated in the November 15th. event.
MEDIA ALERT: Houston, TX Allstate Agent Urges Sunnyside High School Students to “X the TXT” ~ November 15, 2011
In continuation of the Partnership with the Texas Allstate Region for the 2009-2010
school year, four SAVE Chapters received additional funding for their
Teen Safe Drivig Activities in Waco and Lubbock Texas. The participating
schools include:
IRA Independent School District, Ira, Texas
The IRA SAVE chapter wanted their students to improve in the following areas
in order to become better leaders and discover their own self worth in their
approach of a better life prepared person with endless opportunities before them. 1)
Develop a healthier self-concept, healthier relationships and personal responsibilities. 2)
Understand emotional intelligence and the skills it measures, including self-
awareness, self control, self motivation, and social skills. 3) Build skills in
public speaking and communication as well as understanding of personal image.
4) Recognize and resist peer pressure. 5) Learn to become better family members and
citizens. 6) Appreciate the need for vision in goal-setting, personally and socially.
Students will improve in these areas through conducting Teen Safe Driving
activities and youth safety activities.
Update: The Ira SAVE Chapter was very busy this year with many
different projects. They kicked off the school year with back to school safety
tips for kids. The SAVE students handed out coloring books with tips on how to
get on the school bus properly, stay away from strangers, and how not to be a
bully in class. The students also conducted activities for Teen Safe Driving
Week, Red Ribbon Week and the Fall Festival. Each day had a theme and the
students had to dress according to the theme in order to participate in an
event each day. On Tuesday of that week the junior high and high school
students viewed a texting video and discussed safe driving. They hosted
a speaker from DPS who spoke to the students about impaired driving and
distractions and driving. On Wednesday the students put on a texting and
driving skit, students were moved to tears on the dramatic presentation.
On Thursday the SAVE Chapter hosted a Red Meal to commemorate Red Ribbon
week. They served a spaghetti meal to 200 community members and discussed
their SAVE chapter activities.
Lubbock Cooper High School, Lubbock, TX
The Cooper SAVE Chapter continued to encourage seat belt
usage with seat belt checks, informed the community about
new seat belt laws in Texas, sponsored drug and alcohol awareness
throughout the year, sponsored internet safety and bus safety programs
for all campuses. They conducted Red Ribbon Week activities
where they recognized students, faculty, and community members who were
role models to the students. The SAVE Chapter partnered with
other schools in hosting a SUMMIT (Students Uniting to Make Meanningful Influences Together)
that dealt with numerous teen issues including responsible
driving and drug and alcohol choices.
Update: The Lubbock Cooper SAVE Chapter conducted a Texting Course.
In this activity they made a course in which they had to text the
school song while going through an obstacle course. This showed
students that they need to pay attention on the road and that cell
phones are not for when moving. They also held a Red Ribbon Week
where they conducted daily activities. The week focused around being
drug and alcohol free. They had "Toilet Times" that gave facts on
drugs and gave facts over the announcements. The Chapter has impacted
around 1200 students so far this year. They tried to get everyone involved
even if it as small as listening to an announcement about safe driving.
Marlin High School, Marlin, TX
The Marlin High School SAVE Chapter conducted youth safety
activities which included teen safe driving activities during key
times of the year including America's Safe Schools Week, National
Red Ribbon Week, and around the holidays. A major project focused
on a school and community awareness campaign on Seat Belts and Passenger
Safety. They utilized their local police department, Allstate
agents and others during the spring semester.
UPDATE:The Marlin SAVE Chapter members participated in two
activities during the fall semester including See You at the Pole
and Red Ribbon Week. The students established an information center
and placed it in the main hallway that holds brochures and pamphlets
with prevention and safety topics. The entire school was positively
impacted during the National Red Ribbon Week campaign. The prevention
event allowed students, faculty and staff to voluntarily wear a red
"Banding Together Against Drugs" wristband which symbolized their
commitment to a drug free community. To keep people involved the
wristbands were numbered so that participants could enter a drawing
for prizes at the end of week. Prevention information such as 10
Reasons to be Drug Free, and 8 Reasons I Choose a Drug Free Life,
was provided to listeners over the intercom during the morning
school announcements. To reinforce the messages, poster sheets
with the same information were placed in hallways and the cafeteria.
The goal was to heighten awareness and to remind the students and
staff of the importance of keeping oneself and others safe.
UPCOMING EVENTS: In February they hosted a Love
Enough to Buckle Up event to promote Seat Belts and Passenger Safety.
In May they conducted safe driving events around prom and
graduation to celebrate National Youth Traffic Safety Month.
Springlake Earth High School, Earth, TX
The Springlake Earth SAVE Chapter focused on highway safety. Their
school is located in a rural area and students drive a distance to get there
every day. The law in Texas is changing requiring all individuals in a vehicle
to wear their seatbelts regardless of age or location in the vehicle. They
focused on awareness activities of this law. In additional, all children under
the age of 8 must be restrained in a vehicle in a booster seat. Awareness
activities were conducted including proper installation and importance of
child safety seats. Many Springlake students drive younger siblings, family
members or even baby-sitting charges around in car seats and they feel this is
an area that students are lacking important information.
Update: The chapter attended Peer Education Training in October. They
worked with elementary students and teachers to educate them on
the dangers of bullying. The chapter conducted surveys with students and
compiled a power point presentation of the results to share with students.
They hosted a violence prevention awareness week and presented skits about
bullying to students. The Chapter hosted announcements about the changes in
law for Texas drivers, including the requirement that all passengers wear
seatbelts regardless of age, that it is against the law for anyone to text in
a school zone, and that all children younger than age 8 must be in a booster
seat if they are below a minimum weight.
Upcoming events: After losing a student in an unpreventable, yet tragic
car accident earlier this year, then losing the parent of some elementary and
junior high students a month later, the school has definitely seen the impact and
importance of safe driving habits. They hosted a BUST (Buckle Up and Stop
Texting) event in the spring. An area sports reporter started the program after
an area student was killed while texting and driving on her way to school. He
spoke at their event, a pledge drive was conducted, the parents of the
killed student also spoke. On Wednesday February 10, Rachel's Challenge
conducted an assembly (student killed at Columbine). Four area high schools
were in attendance.
Texas Allstate Partnership Mid Year Report
The Allstate Foundation presented a grant of $100,000 to the National Association
of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) to fund Teen Safe Driving Summits
and activities in Texas high schools. In the first of a series of regional Teen
Safe Driving Summits, Lubbock area high schools met to focus on how and why
to address teen safe driving issues; what teen safe driving activism plans they
have for the coming school year; and what tips they have for other teens who want
to drive safely. Teens were engaged in interactive, participatory activities and skits.
The role of SAVE in working with teens to
learn wise decision making skills is becoming increasing important. Peers are a
major influence on teens - both positive and negative. Nearly half said they are
sometimes distracted by passengers (47 percent), and nearly as many said they
drive more safely without friends in the car (44 percent). More than half
(53 percent) said friends would be the most effective influence in getting
them to drive more safely. (Chronic, A Report on the State of Teen Driving,
The Allstate Foundation, 2005) It is important to involve teens in a meaningful
way in safe driving efforts.
"This generous grant from The Allstate Foundation will assist students in finding
real solutions to the issues of violence that they face each day," stated Dr.
Pamela L. Riley, Executive Director of SAVE.
With support from Allstate agents and employee volunteers, SAVE chapters in the
Lubbock, Waco, Brownsville and other areas of Texas area will be able to provide leadership school-wide
to ensure that all students will be encouraged and empowered with healthy life
skills while being engaged in educational activities and opportunities to promote
safe teen driving. SAVE believes that every student should be able to attend a
school that is safe and secure, free of fear and conducive to learning. Through
The Allstate Foundation grant, participating SAVE chapters across Texas will receive:
- Mini Grants - Each school will receive a $250 mini grant to use to create
an awareness campaign in their school/community regarding Teen Safe Driving.
- Educational / Promotional Materials
- Project Banners
