The National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) is proud to partner with the Allstate Foundation in the West Central Region to support the youth safety and teen safe driving efforts of students through their SAVE Chapters.

2011-2012

NNational SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) in partnership with The Allstate Foundation is sponsoring 12 schools and chapters in the West Central US in an effort to promote teen driver safety awareness in America's youth. A $40,400 grant from The Allstate Foundation will allow National SAVE and The Allstate Foundation's Teen Safe Driving program to be implemented in selected schools, chapters, community agencies or related programs. Emphasis is to be placed on the hazards of texting and driving, cellphone related accidents and other dangers facing Generation Z's youth.

  • Maysville High School - Maysville, MO
    Maysville High School in Maysville, MO is one of the new SAVE Chapters participating in the Allstate grant program this year. Their plans include an safe driving activity night in December. Local law enforcement and Allstate agents will be invited to attend and speak at the event. The Maysville SAVE Chapter advisor is Jamie Israel.

    MEDIA ALERT: Maysville High School SAVE Chapter, Maysville, MO, to conduct Teen Safe Driving Activities on December 22, 2011 ~ December 20, 2011

    The Maysville FCCLA and SAVE Chapter hosted a texting and drunk driving program on December 22, 2011 in which over 90 students participated. There was a texting and drunk driving presentation by the FCCLA high school officers and students were then randomly placed in small groups and participated in texting and drunk driving simulation stations. Allstate agent Mark Crabill from St. Joseph, set up a an X the TXT station for students pledge not to text while driving. The Maysville FCCLA would like to thank the Allstate Foundation and SAVE for the generous grant, Mr. Crabill for attending the program, Casey’s for donating the cups and napkins for the food station, and the Maysville school for the use of all equipment and allowing the program to be held in the gym.

  • Central Heights High School - Richmond, KS
    This SAVE Chapter runs in conjunction with the school's SADD program. Seat belt checks were conducted in September, as students were leaving a school football game. Those who were buckled up were given a 'lifesaver' and those who were not were reminded of the importance of doing so. In October, Joe White, a victim of destructive driving, presented to the students about how bad decisions can affect your whole life. Coming up this Spring, a "grim reaper" day is being planned. Posters, fliers and annoucements will help promote the dangers of imparied driving. The Central Heights SAVE Chapter is advised by Bud Welch, who is also a driver's education instructor.

  • Brookings High School - Brookings, SD
    Brookings High School has plans to promote safe and non-distrated driving with presentations, videos, info tables, radio announcements, and school infomercials. Awareness activities will also focus around prom. Joline Dunbar is the SAVE Advisor at Brookings High School.

  • Burrton High School - Burrton, KS
    This is Burrton High School's second year to be a part of the Allstate teen safe driving grant program. Activities in the Fall included a presentation to 8th grade Family & Consumer Science students, and an assembly where the video "Smashed: Toxic Tales of Teens and Alcohol" was viewed. A mock accident activity involving local law enforcement and media is being planned for April 11, 2012. Burrton High School's SAVE advisor is Dana Kreie.

  • Sullivan Senior High School - Sullivan, MO
    During the Fall of 2011, Sullivan High School's SAVE Chapter will conducted monthly seatbelt checks with the assistance of local and state police, particpated in Red Ribbon Week, and held lunctime activities emphasizing the dangers of impaired and distracted driving. Daily talks on violence prevention and poster and flyer contests also supported the teen safe driving campaign. During May other events will include a golf cart driving range, use of impairment goggles and marquee messages. The SAVE advisor at Sullivan High is Sue Lackey.

  • Carlisle High School - Carlisle, IA
    Carlisle High held a poster contest to encourage safe driving behavior in December 2011. Thirty-two posted were created! Drinking and driving statistics were handed out on candy canes. During National Youth Violence Prevention Week in March, students will write "LOVE" on their wrists to remember to love their neighbors and not resort to violence. A pledge to not text and drive and the use of impairment goggles, and an "Every 15 Minutes" program are being planned for May during National Youth Traffic Safety month.   • Cabool High School Team Spirit - Cabool, MO
    This new SAVE Chapter plans to promote teen driving safety with PSAs by students during school announcements, seatbelt checks, posters and bulletin board campaigns. Also in the works is a mock accident docudrama in conjunction with local EMT and law enforcement. The advisor for the Cabool High School Team Spirit SAVE Chapter is Sherry Wheat.

  • Sunburst FCCLA - Sunburst, MT
    The Sunburst FCCLA SAVE Chapter plans to sponsor T-shirt, bumper sticker and poster design contests during National Youth Violence Prevention Week in March, along with guest speakers and announcements. A distracted driving event with impairment goggles and obstacle course is also in the works. The Sunburst SAVE Chapter advisor is Nancy Linnell.

  • Marionville High School FCCLA - Matrionville, MO
    Marionville's SAVE Chapter plans to create safe driving awareness with posters, morning announcements during National Youth Violence Prevention Week in March. During National Youth Traffic Safety Month in May, state highway patrol officers will be invited to the school for assemblies and seat belt checks, and traffic safety lessons will be shared with all high school classes. The SAVE Chapter advisor is Iris Bounds.

    National SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) in partnership with The Allstate Foundation are sponsoring 17 schools and chapters in the West Central Region in an effort to promote teen driver safety awareness in America's youth. A $50,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation allows the SAVE program to be implemented in schools or community agencies. Awareness campaigns will be conducted during key times of the year throughout the state.

    Participating schools/agencies:

    • Wellington High School - Wellington, KS
      Wellington High School in Wellington, Kansas is one of the new SAVE Chapters participating in the Allstate grant program. The chapter has incorporated the SAVE program into their Freshman Crusader Way course. Partnering with the Seatbelts Are For Everyone (SAFE) program, SAVE members gave out keychains during after after-school seatbelt awareness event. The chapter also created posters depicting things they'd rather spend money on than a seatbelt ticket.

      The Wellington SAVE Chapter, in conjunction with their SAFE (Seatbelts are for Everyone) program had a 19% increase in seatbelt use. The school started at 68% in November 2010 and ended with 87% in April 2011 during the final survey. SAVE members assisted with DARE CAMP day on May 10, 2010. Presenters and attendees included representatives from Kansas Highway Patrol, Wellington EMS, Kansas Fish and Game, Wellington Fire, Wellington Police Department, and the Sumner County Sheriff's Office. Presentations were made to over 1000 students from all over the county and activities focused on seatbelt safety, and alcohol and DUI enforcement.

    • Douglass High School - Douglass, KS
      The SAVE chapter at Douglass High School had a very active fall. They kicked off the year by distributing safe driving materials to parents during enrollment. In September, they conducted a seatbelt check as students were leaving the campus parking lot after school. Those wearing seatbelts were rewarded with a dollar bill while those not wearing seatbelts were given a pamphlet on buckling up. Also in September, safety messages were read over the PA system during Spirit Night, the evening before Homecoming. In October during Red Ribbon Week, the chapter had a drunk driving goggle display, a "White Out Day," a "no texting while driving" promotion, which included placing awareness posters around the school. Allstate agent Krystal Allee was invited to attend the events. A safe driving rally was held in the spring of 2011.

    • St. Clair High School - St. Clair, MO
      The St. Clair High School SAVE Chapter made a significant impact on the students and community this school year. They will focus on issues such as tolerance, the reduction of violence as well as safe teen driving. Safe driving topics addressed included seat belt use, and dangers of impaired driving. A surprise seat belt check was held on November 1, 2010 as students entered the high school parking lot. "Smarties" were given are a reward to those wearing seatbelts and "Dum-Dums" to those who were not, as a reminder of the importance of seatbelt safety. A "Don't Let Your Anger Heat Up" hot chocolate giveaway was held in December, a Teen Safe Driving Rally in April, and a mock car crash in May. A safe driving program presented by the Missouri State Highway Patrol is being held in June 2011.

    • Pythons Drill Team - Kansas City, MO
      The Pythons Youth Drill Team works with youth and focuses on building strong communities. The SAVE chapter has received positive feedback from their anti-violence presentations. Fights are a regular occurrence in their school district, and students are focusing on walking away or assisting to rectify situations before they get out of hand. In October, the chapter manned a youth safety booth at the Nebraska Furniture Community Day and also distributed violence prevention and anti-bullying literature at the Negro Leagues Museum.

      During the annual drill and dance team show at Hickman Mills High School, SAVE Advisor Wanda Winters spoke about the teams collaborating together on promoting school safety and safe teen driving. On April 26, 2011, the team had a rally during which they shared ideas on violence prevention, solutions to bullying and seat belt safety.

    • Skyview High School - Billings, MT
      Skyview High School has a new SAVE Chapter which operates alongside the school's current SADD club. The chapter has had members teach a lesson and speak to classes at the local middle school. The Fatal Vision Goggles Go-Cart course event was held May 10 & 11, 2011. Students were impressed and moved by the difficulty of the course.

    • Montbello High School - Denver, CO
      The SAVE Chapter at Montbello High School celebrated American's Safe Schools Week this Fall with several activities. On Purple Ribbon Day, ribbons were placed on car antennas in the student and teacher parking lots to promote peace and remember fallen Warriors. Candy with "peace messages" were distributed to students. SAVE posters and posters with bullying statistics were displayed throughout the school halls. Safety PSA were also broadcasted during the week.

      Other activities throughout the school year included the "Day of Silence." Students painted their faces white, did not speak all day, had teen driving statistics around their necks and cards to hand out that explained that they are not speaking to represent the thousands of teens that die each year from car accidents. Students made chalk outlines (like a crime scene) in the parking lot with more teen driving statistics for students to read as they went to their cars. Dum Dums and Smarties were handed out with messages of: "Be a Smartie, don't text and drive!" or "Don't be a Dum Dum, wear your seat belt!"

      Allstate agent Roger Francis visited the school with a crash car and information to share with the students. The blood on the roof of the crash car had a huge impact on the students. Hearing the story from Roger Francis as to what happened to the student driving really got the students thinking. After seeing the crash car they were more than willing to sign the X-The-Text pledge with their thumb print and received wrist bands and thumb rings.

    • Brookings FCCLA Chapter - Brookings, SD
      The Brookings FCCLA Chapter held a drunk driving simulation during Homecoming with the assistance of the sheriff's department highway patrol and other local law enforcement. A videotape was also created and will be used for future PSAs and educational presentations.

      The Brookings FCCLA SAVE Chapter's projects have focused on helping people make safe choices to keep roadways safe for everyone by increasing awareness of the dangers of both distracted driving and drinking and driving. Projects included a docudrama prior to homecoming week to illustrate the horrible realities of drinking and driving. Included was an accident scene, emergency room action, a courtroom, a double funeral, and a speaker who lost his sight in a drinking and driving accident. They videotaped homecoming royalty in DUI simulation goggles driving golf carts to show other students how much drinking affects judgment. A Ghost Out day was held to represent victims of fatal drunk driving accidents over the past year in our state. Distracted Driving Week included an all school assembly on texting and driving, `X the TXT' events where students pledge not to text and drive, and displays. Distracted driving workshops were presented to students at the national cluster meeting in St. Louis, a neighboring school, and two district FCCLA meetings. They also created a PSA to play on school televisions and during presentations to increase awareness of the dangers of distracted driving.

    • Marionville High School FCCLA - Marionville, MO
      Marionville High School FCCLA has experienced the tragedy of losing students to traffic accidents. Activities events and projects have included posters & banners in the school hallways for the last 2 months of the school year.

      A speaker from the Missouri Department of Transportation was contacted and all school assembly was held on May 6, 2011. Allstate Agent, Bill Baker, from Aurora, MO attended. The speaker discussed the impact of being hit by a drunk driver who left the scene of the accident. She spoke of the impact that it had on her life to have to endure 7 long surgeries with more that will come in her life. Several hands on activities with goggles provided additional impact. Students received stickers, anti-texting rings, pencils and Mr. Bobble heads to remind them of the activities. Students were encouraged to take the pledge not to text and drive; in addition, students were encouraged to take pledge cards home to family members to get them involved as well. In addition, road signs were placed at the exit of the school parking lots to remind students of the impact of texting and driving.

    • Sullivan Senior High - Sullivan, MO
      The Sullivan Sr. High School SAVE Chapter would like to reduce the number of students texting and driving. Students made posters, distributed flyers, and made morning announcements with statistics and held a student body assembly. "The Final Text" PSA was shown during the lunch periods. Local law enforcement assisted with seat belt and safety checks. Local Allstate agents were invited to attend the event.

    • Burrton High School FCCLA - Burrton, KS
      The new SAVE Chapter at Burrton High School raised awareness of safe teen driving through informational posters and school announcements. On May 11, 2011, Burrton Police Chief Becker addressed all high school students on driving safety, seat belt use, texting while driving, and drinking and driving. An invitation to the event was extended to Allstate agents at the Charlsen Insurance Agency/

    • West Central Valley High School - Stuart, IA
      The West Central Valley High School focused this year on reducing bullying and harassment for students K-12 and teen safe driving for students in high school. Posters were displayed around the school discouraging drinking and driving and the dangers of text messaging while driving. Public(student) announcements with driving facts involving both of these topics were made.

    • Ava High School Student Council - Ava, MO
      The Ava High School SAVE Chapter has encouraged students to buckle up and to pledge to not text and drive with several activities. Reminder item such as thumb rings, key chains, tattoos, and silly bands were distributed to the students. Their Facs Class worked with the community to pass out treats in the parking lot as students were leaving for the day. The demonstration of distraction goggles showed students the danger of texting and driving and the video, “The Last Text,” was viewed by the student body. Traffic Safety Month was promoted in May with activities to educate and inform students and community.

    • Gering High School Student Council - Gering, NE
      Gering High School helped to increase awareness of the dangers of texting and drinking while driving by promoting teen safe driving during the spring of 2011. The Student Council President announced after the pledge to not text and drive and a couple driving safety facts for six days, after which students were given a quiz on the subject. Those with perfect scores received prizes.

      The chapter will continue their program into the 2011-2012 school year when they will have a major presentation on safe driving practices by Nebraska State Trooper Chuck Elley. He is expected to bring the seat belt and roll over simulators for student demonstrations.

    • Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka High School - Crystal Lake, IA
      Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka High School juniors and seniors were asked to sign a pledge to not text and drive and to use seat belts in advance of prom events. Informational posters were displayed in the school lobby. The chapter plans to continue their safe driving awareness activities at school sporting events over the summer.

    • Central Heights USD 288 - Richmond, KS
      The SAVE Chapter at Central Heights USD will be promoting safe driving through their driver's education program. A seat belt check in the school parking lot took place on May 6, 2011. SAVE will be run alongside their SADD program year-round.

    • Brunswick FCCLA - Brunswick, MO
      Brunswick FCCLA educated their teens about the dangers of driving while drinking, texting, and while being distracted or drowsy. The importance of wearing seatbelts, traffic safety while walking, and safe bicycle riding were also emphasized. A road safety class was presented in April to 3rd grade students by 5 of the SAVE Chapter high school members. On May 17 a safety belt check was conducted in the school parking lot. Those wearing safety belts received Smarties and those not wearing safety belts received Dum Dums.

    • Maywood High School - Maywood, NE
      Maywood High School conducted seat belt and cell phone checks as students were leaving the school parking lot. They plan to continue this activity several times a month to help get students in the habit of wearing their seat belts and not using their cell phone while driving.

2009/2010

Through the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE), The Allstate Foundation is sponsoring ten schools in the West Central Region in their efforts to promote youth safety. A $60,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation will allow the SAVE program to be implemented in ten schools or community agencies in the West Central Region and awareness campaigns will be conducted during key times of the year throughout the region.

Participating schools/agencies:

  • Montbello High School, Denver, CO The Montbello High School is increasing awareness by representing SAVE with t-shirts and other merchandise. They participated in Safe Schools week and recognized National SAVE Day in October by promoting peace through the week. In December, they participated in a national service project benefiting battered woman’s shelters.

    During National Youth Violence Prevention Week in March the handed out purple ribbons to remember fallen Warriors and to promote peace. A SAVE table in the cafeteria had available SAVE pamphlets, brochures, buttons, pencil and pens. Also handed out were Twizzlers with messages attached about non-violence and MHS CrimeStoppers information. The Chapter created CrimeStoppers commercial and violence prevention commercials and aired them on the morning announcements.

    A Safe Driving week was observed in May by representing the dead by painting faces and wearing signs with statistics about teen driving. Bumper sticker and phone stickers were distributed to remind students not to use their phone while driving) that we got from our AllState Agent, Nicole Alley. We created commercials about safe driving and had them played on the announcements every morning. Finally, the end of the year reception/election potluck was held, followed by the SAVE overnight at the Hyatt Place Hotel up the street. The SAVE member’s were able to bond, hangout and get to know each other as well as have one last hurrah for the seniors before graduation.

  • Greeley West High School, Greeley, CO
    Greeley West High School’s Future Farmers of America’s SAVE Chapter increased teen driving safety awareness by staging a Mock Crash event at the school in October in conjunction with Homecoming. The event received the assistance of the Union Colony Fire/Rescue Authority firefighters. Guest speakers discussed issues such as texting while driving and seat belt surveys were taken before and after the event.

  • Pythons Youth Drill Team - Kansas City, MO
    The Pythons Youth Drill Team offers cultural and performing arts for all ages. Their Drill and Dance Team and Drum Line offer programs in core development areas such as Character and Leadership and Education and Career. The Allstate grant was used to focus on driving safety, insurance and smart driving skills. On April 17, 2010, the Drill Team hosted the Planet Rock drill and dance team show which exhibits awareness of commonalities and differences among youth and respects those of different talents and ablities.

  • Laramie County Community College - Cheyenne, WY
    Laramie Community College focused on seeing a reduction in vehicle crashes involving teens. Their goal was to educate teen drivers on the consequences of drinking and driving and other types of reckless behavior behind the wheel. Education was provided on making the appropriate decisions while driving.

  • Crook County Family Violence - Sundance, WY
    Crook County Family Violence Services held a Teen Safe Driving Rally in May during National Youth Traffic Safety Month for the students at Sundance High School. The dangers of reckless driving was highlighted with a video, and a presentation by local law enforcement. Students also participated in demonstrations of sobriety tests using impairment goggles. Also highlighted during the school year was anti-bullying. A presentation addressing bullycide and bully-related school shootings was shown to and discussed with the Sundance SAVE Chapter.

  • Bluestem High School - Leon, KS
    The Bluestem High School SAVE Chapter conducted a Drunk Driving Awareness Day on April 28, 2010, pre-prom, with the help of the Allstate Foundation grant. Activities included powerful guest speakers and a drunk/distracted driving course utilizing golf carts and a school wide teen safe driving assembly. The awareness campaign included posters, announcements and printed materials.

  • Douglass High School - Douglass, KS
    The Douglass High School SAVE Chapter conducted Teen Safe Driving activities to make students more aware of various driving dangers they may face, including not wearing seatbelts, texting while driving, and driving while intoxicated. In May an After Prom party was sponsored for the entire student body. The event began at 11:30 pm and concluded at 3:30 am with a breakfast cooked by SAVE staff and parents. The emphasis of the event was to give students a positive and safe activity to participate in after prom.

    On May 6, students conducted a seatbelt survery prior to school on all vehicles entering the parking lot. 80% seatbelt use was observed. Pledge cards were available at lunch and there was a drawing for prizes. The next day, was Academic Spirit Day for all students with no failing grades and completed assignments. This was held in conjunction with the Safe Teen Driving Rally and speakers included Trooper Warner from the Kansas Highway Patrol Officer demonstrating a seatbelt convincer. Also present was Allstate representative, Krystal Allee, who discussed the consequences of distractions while driving.

For more than 20 years, SAVE, a student-led nonprofit organization, has educated and empowered young people in schools and community-based organizations to promote youth safety. SAVE's efforts engage close to 200,000 student members in schools and communities in 47 states, reducing the potential for violence in K-12 schools and communities by promoting meaningful student involvement, education and service opportunities. "This generous grant from the Allstate Foundation will assist students in finding real solutions to the issues of youth safety that they face each day," stated Dr. Pamela L. Riley, Executive Director of SAVE.
