S.A.V.E. CHAPTER HIGHLIGHT
Burns Middle School
The Burns Middle School Students Against Violence Everywhere
(SAVE) Chapter in Lawndale, NC is
continuously making a difference in both its school and community.
The current membership of the chapter consists of a 182 students and has averaged 50
students per meeting. Since September, the
SAVE chapter has been holding monthly
meetings focused on community building, conflict resolution, and service to others.
Some of the achievements of the Burns Middle School
SAVE Chapter for this current school year
are:
Overnight Lock-In: Recently, the chapter organized an overnight lock-in that
was facilitated and supervised by Burns Middle School staff. The purpose of the lock-in
was to host an evening full of fun nonviolent activities and events. The students
enjoyed a night of group interaction through Karaoke singing and dancing, lively
hand-drumming sessions, sports, and board games. The night was topped off by pizza and
soft drinks. The event was a big success with the attendance of 48
SAVE members.
Food Drive: In November, the Burns Middle School
SAVE chapter and Student Council came
together to sponsor a school-wide food drive. The goal of the two organizations was to
collect 2,200 items for donation, roughly two items per student and staff member. Both
the SAVE chapter and the Student Council
were pleasantly surprised to find out the school raised 3,396 items that are being
distributed throughout their community.
Christmas Parade: On Saturday, December 6, 2003, 29 members from the Burns
Middle School SAVE Chapter marched in the
local Christmas parade. The members carried banners and posters promoting
SAVE and a number of "increase in peace"
themes.
