STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE ~
NATIONAL SAVE DAY ~ October 18, 2006
Question Posed: How is your SAVE Chapter Celebrating
National SAVE Day?
Eastern Greene Elementary and Junior High School, Bloomfield, IN
The Eastern Greene Elementary and Junior High School will
celebrate National SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere)
Day with a membership drive and rally. Starting on Oct. 16 the
elementary and junior high will participate in a membership
drive. Our goal is to be 700 members strong this year. On National
SAVE day (Oct. 18), the student advisory board will host a
SAVE rally for students in the fourth through eighth grade.
The SAVE Rally will be a way to educate the students about SAVE.
The rally - which will include bullying and conflict resolution
skits, poems, and cheers - will be both fun and educational.
It's a fun way for all the students to get involved with the
SAVE Chapter. The students will walk away with an understanding
of what SAVE stands for, how they can start making a
difference in their school, and how to relate that information
to their everyday lives.
~ Kim Hill
Moore Intermediate School, Florence, SC

The Montbello SAVE chapter is celebrating SAVE Day by putting orange
and purple ribbons on all the lockers at our school. We will be
putting up posters of students that have passed away because of
violence with statistics on them. The students in the posters are the
all of the individual Columbine students and some of our fallen
Warriors from Montbello. Also the week of SAVE day we will be reading
the stories of how students have passed away because of violence to
remind them how we are effected by violence each day. We will also
have a peace poster with peace written all over it in many different
languages and have a Peace pledge poster outside of the cafeteria so
students can sign it. In addition to all of this, our SAVE chapter
will do a side walk mural in front of the school about SAVE. We are
all working really hard to make all of this happen and we are all very
exited for SAVE Day!!!
~ Christian Gonzalez
Butner-Stem Middle School, Butner, NC
Butner-Stem Middle School just started it's SAVE chapter during the
month of September. We used National SAVE day as a way to advertise our
chapter. SAVE memebers placed orange and purple ribbons on all of the
student lockers to represent the satistic that one in four people will
be effected by violence this year. We made announcements over the
intercom to explain the display and encourage students to join SAVE as a
way to help keep their communites safe.

We, at Wayne Elementary, are holding a 5th grade mini-training
and brainstorming session on Wednesday. The kids are going to
come up with ways to spread the message of positive actions and
non-violence to the younger grades, i.e. lunch time commercials/skits,

~ Danielle C. Budenz

Syosset High School, NY
At Syosset High School, we tried to impart SAVE's message on
our peers through a hybrid National SAVE Day and Mix It Up day,
in what we called 'Peace, Love & Pizza Day'. Through a human
scavenger hunt, musical preformances (by students and teachers-
even the school principal!), and the signing of a peace banner,
we were able to meet our goals of breaking down social
boundaries and spreading the message of peace. Through a
non-violent breakdance battle, students from all different
cliques and groups were able to come together in the spirit
of fun and friendship. We also were able to raise money for
a domestic abuse charity and for National SAVE through the
sales of tee shirts and a 'guess how many candies are in the
jar' contest. The day was exciting for all, and Syosset
SAVE
can't wait to see the effects of Peace, Love & Pizza Day!
Crookston High School, Crookston, MN
With the recent rash of violence in schools across the nation,
"Journey Into a Better Tomorrow," a production by the Crookston
High School chapter of SAVE, is even more applicable than it
was when the chapter premiered it nearly two years ago. So SAVE
will once again present the program to the public at 7 p.m. Thursday,
Oct. 26 in the CHS gymnasium. "This riveting hour-long production
uses a combination of PowerPoint slides, songs, poems and skits
to educate communities on the physical and emotional effects
of violence and to promote peace and nonviolence," SAVE members explained.
Highland School of Technology, Gastonia, NC
We are decorating our lockers with ribbons. Every 4th ribbon
has an orange or purple ribbon (it alternates) to show the
statistic that 1 in 4 teens are affected by violence. We are
having students sign "I believe" statements during lunch this
week. On Wednesday, the SAVE, Interact, and SADD officers will
choose I believe statements to read during our SAVE Rally.
Our Step Team will perform with a message about SAVE. We will
end with some general information about SAVE, violence statistics,
and safety tips. Finally, we are having a combined assembly for
Red Ribbon Week and will show a video about the dangers of
drinking and driving.

Orange Park High School, Orange Park, FL
In our third month of existence and under the leadership of President
Brittany Spahn and Vice President Ashley Liz, the Orange Park chapter
of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) engaged in two
school-wide activities during National Safe Schools Week October 16 to 20.
On Sunday October 15, the SAVE club placed over 400 purple and
orange ribbons along various walkways on campus. The club
placed three purple ribbons for every orange ribbon to heighten
the awareness among the student body to the statistic that
during any single school year one in four high school students
will be the likely victim of some sort of crime. On Wednesday October 18,
club members placed banners in the cafeteria and encouraged students
to sign a "pledge" to work for school anticrime and antiviolence
efforts. Over 350 students signed the pledge banners. Club
members also recruited students to join a Conflict Management
Team and be trained as peer mediators. Thirty-seven students
signed up for the Conflict Management Team joining fifteen members
who had already enlisted. During the cafeteria campaign thirty-nine
students also signed up as new club members.
