STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE ~
2008-2009 NATIONAL YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD
The members of the 2008-2009 National SAVE
Youth Advisory Board (YAB) have an exciting and action packed year planned.
Following an intensive Youth Leadership Institute in October, where they are trained
to be trainers and presenters for SAVE, they
will have many events and projects ahead of them. They will plan activities for
National SAVE Day, the National SAVE Summit and the 20th Anniversary of SAVE! Check back frequently
to see what the YABers are working on and have planned for the
2008-2009 school year!
At their fall institute, the YABers took some time to address a
major issue affecting Teens - Safe Driving. Here are a few of the
publications they created to address this issue:

YABer YAK:
The
Month of Love
– Submitted by Amanda Krebsbach, YAB Event Coordinator
February can be a great time of the year. You're halfway done with the school year, and of
course Valentine's Day is coming up. But no matter how you spend the month of February,
you still need to be aware of what goes on around you. Valentine's Day can be a wonderful
day of love; however, it can also be a filled with opportunities for dating violence. To make
sure that your school or community knows some of the facts, it may be a good idea to make
heart shaped Valentine cards, each with a statistic on dating abuse on them. Also, why not
go to people who have actually been affected by this, like maybe a domestic violence
shelter? Volunteer to watch some of the kids to give parents a little time to breathe, or hold
a clothing drive for them. Many of these people have left home with just their kids and the
clothes on their back, so it feels good to help however you can. Whatever your chapter
decides to do this month, good luck and have fun making a difference! For additional
Dating Violence materials, visit the Chapter Access section.
A Season for Making a Difference
in the Community!
- Submitted by Nigel Cox, Eastern Regional Representative
December is the month where we transition from a month of being thankful and go into a
month where we are still thankful, but we also focus on sharing and giving. By SAVE
chapters reaching out to our communities, we have the opportunity to show how youth are
making positive differences in our schools and communities. However, we can’t do it alone,
that's why we need unity. To make a true and meaningful difference in the community,
students should partner with other community agencies, businesses, the faith community,
and other youth organizations. The holidays are a perfect time for communities to come
together for the common good. During the holidays, many SAVE chapters volunteer at
local soup kitchens, conduct canned food drives, provide holiday meals for the less
fortunate, collect toys and clothes for the needy, visit retirement homes, provide babysitting services for
domestic violence shelters, conduct teddy bear and book drives for orphanages and local hospitals, as
well as visit and entertain children to brighten their days. SAVE chapters like to take extra effort and do a
little more during the holidays. The National SAVE Youth Advisory Board (YAB) challenges each SAVE
member and chapter to embrace the holiday spirit and to reach out to your community to share peace
and joy this holiday season. Be sure to read about the 2009 National SAVE Service Project in this
newsletter. The YAB has chosen a project that reflects SAVE’s 20th Anniversary! The YABers wish
everyone a very safe and happy holiday season!
National Youth Leadership Institute at Success!
- Submitted by Kalynn Kowitz, Midwest Regional Representative
The National SAVE Youth Advisory Board met for the National Youth Leadership
Institute in early October. Ten students from around the country came together
to receive training, create curriculum and plan for SAVE’s 20th Anniversary and
the National SAVE Summit. Representing the western coast, Danielle Diaz of New
Mexico, Candy Gonzalez and Gerardo Ceballos of Colorado, in the Midwest,
Brehanna Jordan of Illinois, Amanda Krebsbach and Kalynn Kowitz of Wisconsin,
and on the eastern coast, Cassady Tetsworth, Casey Story, Nigel Cox, and Jonai
Lloyd, all of North Carolina.
Each of the YABers were elected to positions
on the board. Brehanna Jordan and Casey Story will serve as Co-Chairs of the board.
Gerardo Ceballos and Cassady Tetsworth were selected to be the Co-Vice Chairs.
Danielle Diaz and Amanda Krebsbach were selected as Event Planners and Public
Relations Coordinators. Jonai Lloyd was named as the Secretary and Nigel Cox,
Candy Gonzalez, and Kalynn Kowitz were selected to be the Regional Representatives.
Much was accomplished by the board and quickly too! All together they planned out
awareness activities, for the 20th Anniversary of SAVE, planned many of the
details of the National SAVE Summit, and completed a brochure on Teen Driver
Safety. By the end of the weekend it was a tearful departure but each left
energized and exciting about making a difference in their schools and
communities through SAVE.
