STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE - CHAPTER HIGHLIGHT
Alexander Central High School
Alexander Central High School received the National Students
Against Violence Everywhere (S.A.V.E.)
Chapter of the Year Award on April 13, 2002. Thanks to the generosity
of GMAC as part of the Chevy R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to Communities and Kids)
initiative, this year's national award not only included a plaque,
but also a Monetary Award of $500.00 to be used to promote the
mission and goals of S.A.V.E.
The chapter competed for this award against S.A.V.E.
chapters nationwide.
The S.A.V.E. chapter
at Alexander Central High School has been active since 1995.
It was started in response to an incident in which a student
brought a handgun to school. This past year the students in the
chapter have been busy organizing a variety of events for the
school and community. In October they held the first annual
March Against Violence in Alexander County in honor of Crime
Prevention Month. The marchers included local law enforcement
officers, judges, teachers, students, and parents. In December
the club assisted with the annual Christmas parade traffic control
and then joined the parade on a float which represented the chapter.
They collected food for elderly residents and adopted a number
of families with children with disabilities. In January the chapter
sponsored two workshops titled "What Part of No Do you Not Understand"
and "Boys to Men: Taking Responsibility". In addition, they have
sponsored a pageant and a candlelight vigil in honor of students,
family members and friends who have died in the past year.
