S.A.V.E. ADVISOR HIGHLIGHT
Corliss Barnes- 2003 S.A.V.E. Advisor of the Year
Belfield Elementary School
On March 29, 2003 at the 8th Annual National Students Against Violence Everywhere
(S.A.V.E.) Summit, the National Association of S.A.V.E. and their national sponsor,
Chevrolet recognized Corliss Barnes, Belfield Elementary School Guidance Counselor,
as S.A.V.E. Advisor of the Year. Thanks to a generous donation from Chevrolet,
through their community initiative, Chevy R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to Communities
and Kids), Barnes received a plaque and a monetary award of $250.
Barnes is serving her first year at Belfield Elementary as the S.A.V.E. advisor
but has served at Squire Elementary School in North Carolina as the advisor for
two years. Coordinating several service projects, national safe schools week
activities, and many violence prevention activities at school, Barnes has helped
to spread the message of S.A.V.E. across several states. Barnes is also her school's
step team leader. She has proven to be an inspiration to all of her students and a
master counselor among her peers. Barnes has helped to boost school spirit and
contribute to the school community.
"To achieve what Mrs. Barnes has done takes a lot of stamina, because we [students] are
always facing the constant, changing needs of kids, changing needs of parents and society,
you just have to be able to roll with the punches and keep your enthusiasm going. That's
exactly what Mrs. Barnes bring to us at Belfield Elementary," says Ashley Staples, S.A.V.E.
member and Belfield Elementary School student.
