S.A.V.E. CHAPTER HIGHLIGHT
D.H. Conley High School
D.H. Conley S.A.V.E. Chapter
Located in eastern North Carolina is one of the oldest and hardest
working S.A.V.E. chapters. D.H. Conley (DHC) High School has
had an active S.A.V.E. chapter since the early 1990s. The
current students serving their school and community under the
DHC S.A.V.E. chapter have kept the tradition alive with more
service projects and activities than ever before!
The DHC S.A.V.E. chapter started off the year with a membership
drive and a series of fundraisers for funds to conduct service
projects and activities for the year. They held a car wash one
Saturday and sold posters, magnets, etc. to the school's student
body. S.A.V.E. students spent time after school and on the weekend
before National Safe Schools week and Red Ribbon week to decorate
their school with ribbons on lockers (denoting statistics of
individuals killed as a result of violence or drunk driving),
as well as with posters and other educational materials.
During the 2001-2002 school year, the DHC S.A.V.E. chapter worked
to raise money from its members and student body to purchase as
many turkeys as possible and donate them to homeless shelters
and meal providing agencies during the holiday season. DHC
S.A.V.E. members also brought in breakfast foods for the
faculty and staff at their school to show their appreciation
for their hard work.
D.H. Conley's S.A.V.E. chapter is advised by School Resource
Officer, Deputy Susan Johsnon. Her S.A.V.E. chapter aids in
her job of informing students of crime prevention and conflict
management tips through out the year to increase school safety.
S.A.V.E. students also assist Deputy Johnson at home football/basketball
games with security and in keeping a watchful eye on the activities
of students and visitors to these athletic events.
The National Association of S.A.V.E. looks to see the DHC S.A.V.E.
chapter in attendance at the 2002 National S.A.V.E. Summit on
April 13, 2002 in Raleigh, NC. Traditionally, the DHC S.A.V.E.
chapter has either conducted or provided students to assist in
presenting at least one workshop.
When asked if the DHC S.A.V.E. chapter had tips for starting
and maintaining a successful S.A.V.E. chapter, several members
replied, "Start small … begin with a handful of interested and
hard working students and at least one supportive and caring advisor.
Plan one activity for the year, and each year after that add-on
a new project or events." Good advice from a S.A.V.E. chapter
with proven strength in leadership, service, and in promoting
and maintaining a safe school and community.
