STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE - CHAPTER HIGHLIGHT
Ivan Goran Kovacic Elementary School
On March 29, 2003 at the 8th Annual National Students Against Violence Everywhere (S.A.V.E.)
Summit, the National Association of S.A.V.E. and their national sponsor, Chevrolet recognized
Ivan Goran Kovacic Elementary School as S.A.V.E. Chapter of the Year. Thanks to a generous donation from Chevrolet,
through their community initiative, Chevy R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to Communities and Kids),
Ivan Goran Kovacic received a plaque and a monetary award of $250.
The National Association of S.A.V.E. is proud to award Ivan Goran Kovacic Elementary School with
this award. This elementary school chapter has broken through the language barriers and demonstrated
the true meaning of S.A.V.E.. They are very active in their community and have held
activities such as a Walk to School Day, a week without violence in their school and
community, Remembrance Day, and held dancing lessons for Dancing instead of Violence Day.
Walk to School Day On October 2, 2002 Over 25 of their chapter members organized a campaign to announce around school
and town this S.A.V.E. activity. They made fliers, posters, informed
the local media, police, parents and teachers. They made a tour around the local florists and in two days
collected a lot of flowers that were donated to each parent or adult who had walked a child to school that day.
A Week Without Violence In school and Local Community The week of October 21-26, 2002 Ivan hosted a week without
violence in school and local communitiy. The campaign lasted for two weeks. They informed the whole community, invited many
people to take part. The posters and fliers were donated from the local print company.
Monday October 21, 2002- Messages of Non-Violence About 50 students wrote messages, painted
pictures and made two wallboards with non-violent messages. The pupils created 20 things to do instead of hurt someone
back and then displayed them on the boards.
Tuesday, October 22, 2002- Rememberance Day The S.A.V.E.
chapter members visited the Monument of 27 children killed during the war in 1992. They laid down flowers,
lit candles and had a short memorial.
Wednesday, October 23, 2002- Juvenile Delinquency-Its Causes and Consequences The police officers
and psychologists in the County Crime police held a lecture for the 7th and 8th graders. There were students
and teachers from the school for the Children with Special Needs as Ivan's guests, parents and teachers.
They learned how to prevent youth delinquency.
Thursday, October 24, 2002 Save the Children The representatives of the Croatian
Red Cross, the Croatian De-mining Center and the NGO of Civilian War Victims held the exhibition and workshop
about land mines and other explosive weapons left in Croatia after the war. They learned about mines and how
to keep themselves safe.
Friday, October 25, 2002 Dancing Tribe-Dancing Instead of Violence A dancing therapist and guest from
England held two dancing workshops for 8th grade boys and girls. 41 students took part in the workshops.
