STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE

FEBRUARY: DON'T BE A CHARACTER...HAVE GOOD CHARACTER TRAITS!

All is fair in LOVE and SAVE! February, the month for love, is the perfect time to show your good character! What are some positive character traits that you admire in others? In this month especially, try to demonstrate good character traits. Be a positive role model for those around you so they can learn good traits as well. Pick out a person in your life that demonstrates good traits and shadow that person for a day. Use the activity ideas to put the following traits and others in action this month in your school and community.

RESPECT, SELF-DISCIPLINE, CARING, GOOD JUDGEMENT, HONESTY, UNDERSTANDING,

KINDNESS, CITIZENSHIP, RELIABILITY, RESPONSIBILITY, DEPENDABILITY, AMBITIOUS,

COURAGE, FAIRNESS, HELPFUL, INTEGRITY, PERSEVERANCE, COOPERATIVE

Crime Prevention Activities

  • Create a “Know Your Rights” handout for students.

  • Visit classrooms and use the Hazing and Bullying Prevention Activity (SAVE Essentials, Conflict Management – 51).

  • Hand out tips on being a good sport while playing and observing athletic events.

  • Sponsor a character trait of the week. Choose 5 students each week to honor for exhibiting the positive trait.

  • Explore the consequences of cheating and how it will affect your character.

  • Discuss with students the concern of stranger danger. Encourage students to discuss a list of people they can trust (SAVE Essentials, Crime Prevention – 17).

Conflict Management Activities

  • Celebrate Black History Month by honoring peace leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr.

  • Visit an elementary school or local shelter and perform a skit based on Ernie the Elephant – How to Treat Others coloring book. Pass out coloring books to the students.

  • Have SAVE members act out a skit at halftime encouraging positive parent behavior at sporting events.

  • Sponsor a “Solving Problems Through Words” workshop, demonstrating positive character traits of caring, kindness, and respect.

Service Project Activities

  • Sponsor a fund-raiser for your chapter or a local domestic violence shelter by selling “Candy Grams” for Valentine’s Day. Include a dating violence statistic.

  • Create “Valentines” for children and women at local domestic violence shelters. Deliver in person and provide an afternoon of fun for the children so the mothers can have an afternoon to themselves.

  • Work with SAVE members and elementary students to create “I Can Be Me” posters. Discuss the importance of positive character traits.
