STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE ~ CHAPTER OF THE YEAR: HALL-WOODWARD ELEMENTARY

The Hall Woodward Elementary SAVE Chapter is being recognized by the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) for their accomplishments. The 2004-2005 National SAVEChapter of the Year Award is being awarded to the Hall-Woodward Elementary SAVE Chapter for their crime prevention, conflict management and service project activities. Yvonne McSwain is the lead advisor for this chapter. The SAVE chapter has ongoing activities, including sponsoring student and parent awareness sessions. The SAVE students mentor younger students in the pre K-2nd grades on ways to make their school safe, on how to be respectful, caring, and not to bully others. SAVE students participate in hands on activities to show other students ways to control their anger and how to handle adverse situations, which all contribute to a safe environment. The SAVE chapter has given back to the community by sponsoring food drives for the local rescue mission; sponsoring a penny drive to purchase unity prints for the school; cleaning the school grounds and flower gardens; donating toiletries to a local nursing home and playing bingo with the residents.

"The impact of the SAVE chapter is measurable in terms of decreased discipline referrals and increased positive parent contacts. The Hall-Woodward SAVE Chapter is a model of the power of channeling children's energy toward improving the world and is deserving of this honor." ~ Donald Hampton, Assistant Principal

As part of National Youth Violence Prevention Week (NYVPW), April 4-8, the Hall-Woodward SAVE Chapter is hosting a student/parent/community leader meeting that will cover the nature of violence, understanding anger, causes of violence and ways to prevent violence. This year's NYVPW takes on added importance in light of the tragic events played out in Red Lake, Minnesota, the site of the nation's most deadly school shooting since Columbine. "The Hall-Woodward Elementary SAVE Chapter, embodies the ideals of SAVE and is a model for SAVE chapters everywhere," stated Dr. Pamela L. Riley, Executive Director of SAVE.
