SAVE CHAPTER HIGHLIGHT
H. H. Dow High School
H. H. Dow High School from Midland, Michigan was honored at the 8th Annual SAVE Summit:
"The Voice Above the Roar" as high school chapter of the year for their implementation of awareness
on the messages of SAVE in their school and community. This annual Summit is a rare and
much anticipated opportunity for young people to speak with other young people to learn about
each other's Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) chapter successes, receive tips
on how to make their chapter more effective, and how to influence other students at their school
to be proactive and join SAVE.
H. H. Dow was honored at the Summit as SAVE chapter of the year for their countless
service projects, violence prevention programs, and awareness efforts. H. H. Dow SAVE
chapter has hosted a Yellow Ribbon Suicide Awareness Day and a White Ribbon Violence Against
Women Day as well as an anti-violence week in their school and a local elementary school.
Their awareness continues to grow, they have already implemented service projects such as
collecting money for a shelter house, collecting money for the Salvation Army, and purchasing
books for abused children.
They have also conducted their own school safety survey so that they can have a part in making their school
environment violence-free. These students, advised by Kurt Faust, have reached out to the local elementary
schools to teach them the importance of respect, how to manage conflicts, and the appropriate expressions
to anger. They composed lesson plans on anger management called the "Anger Management Plan," on conflict
management called "Making Positive Choices to Handle Conflicts," and on bullying called "Be Cool. Don't be a Bully!"
They used these lesson plans to cross-age teach to the younger students in their local elementary school.
