STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE ~ BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEMBER JODY ROY

The Highland School of TechnologySAVE Chapter has been recognized by the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) for its accomplishments. Jody M. Roy: Biography Jody M. Roy is an award-winning professor, violence prevention activist, and author of a variety of works on the subject of hatred and violence. Roy has chaired the Department of Communication at Ripon College since 1992 and prior to that taught and coached debate at Indiana University. Roy’s long list of awards includes the eight-campus Indiana University system’s Lieber Prize for excellence in teaching in 1992, the Weaver Award for Outstanding College-Level Communication Educator in Wisconsin in 2000, and the 2004 Jeanne Robertson Outstanding Professor Award from the National Speakers’ Association. Motivated to take action on her research—the powerful subject of hate-motivated violence among youth--in 2001, Roy founded Students Talking About Respect, Inc. (STAR), a non-profit educational group that developed violence prevention programs for American middle schools and high schools. In late 2004 STAR’s materials and programs became available through the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere. In addition to her work with Students Talking About Respect, Roy has volunteered her time and expertise to develop educational materials and community action guides for several other non-profit corporations devoted to preventing violence, including The Matthew Shepard Foundation, New Light Media, and CIRE Foundation. Although highly in demand as a speaker for K-12 and college audiences during her years with STAR, Roy now limits her speaking schedule, primarily training law enforcement audiences on the complex dynamics of gang recruiting. All of Roy’s outreach work toward preventing youth violence in American communities is based on her work as a scholar, represented in publications such as Love to Hate: America’s Obsession with Hatred and Violence (Columbia University Press, 2002).
