What activities and events has your SAVE Chapter done for National Youth Violence Prevention Week, National Safe Schools Week & National SAVE Day?


NATIONAL YOUTH VIOLENCE PREVENTION WEEK RESPONSES:

We handed out stickers and ribbons and put banners in the cafeteria and in front of the school. The SAVE Club is also in the process of collected care packages for our soldiers. -Adrianna Mathis, Clinton High School, Clinton, NC


On National SAVE Day, Dr. Richard Keller, coroner, speak to us, and Mr. Leon Rockingham, the Mayor of North Chicago, came to talk to the students about Gun Violence. - Brehanna Jordan, North Chicago High School, Chicago, IL


7th and 8th graders went to a presentation on National Day of Concern (against bringing a gun/weapon to school and not to settle problems with a gun/weapon. All grade levels were asked to sign a pledge and banner against guns. We had approximately 150 students sign the bullying pledge in 6th grade and about 600 students of all grade levels signed the gun pledge and banner. The banner will be hung in the hall so that all visitors can see it. -Farmville Middle School, Farmville, NC


Montbello High School will be celebrating America's Safe Schools week and SAVE Day by hanging up posters of students throughout the school who have passed away due to violence and each poster will have a statistic along with it. We will also be putting orange and purple ribbons on all of the lockers, every fourth ribbon will be orange to represent the 1 in 4 students affected by violence. We will also be doing peace pledges outside of the cafeteria so students can sign them. In addition to that we are doing Peace Links. Students will have to buy a link for 25cents and put their name on it. Afterwards we will put them together by class and whatever class gets the longest link wins the Peace Award. - Christian Gonzalez, Montbello High School, Denver, CO


For National SAVE Day, my chapter is going to let the whole school know more about SAVE and have the whole school wear orange and purple on that day. The rest of the week will be like spirit week. I'm not sure if we are doing the National SAVE Rock-A-Thon yet or not, but it is a possibility - we will see if it is a good fund raiser. - Casey Story, Garner High School, Garner, NC


For America's safe school week, my chapter is planning on putting ribbons on the lockers and hanging up posters around school with statistics of student suicides. For National SAVE Day we are going to plant purple and orange flowers everywhere around the school campus, and for the National SAVE Rock-a-thon, we are putting a spin on the traditional word "rock". My SAVE Chapter took part in NYVP Week with different activities each day. We took turns reading SAVE statistics every morning and afternoon on the announcements. On Tuesday we had everyone in school wear purple or orange. We conducted a fundraiser by selling orange and purple hands to put around the school to respect and remember past and present victims of violence (we raised over $100!). We sponsored a drunk driving activty with speakers who illustrated how using alcohol can lead to violence and what the effects of alcohol are on your body. Our chapter kicked off NYVPW by having SAVE members attend the National SAVE Summit where they provided supplies for the National Service Project, submitted a coloring book for the Coloring Book competition and supplied a violence prevention banner. Members then shared the information they learned at the summit with students throughout the school during National Youth Violence Prevention Week. ~ Channing Shor, Middle Creek High School, Apex, NC.


Our SAVE Chapter celebrated this week by giving out candy and statistics. We read facts over the PA, hung posters around the school, put flyers in the bathrooms and in teachers classrooms, and on Thursday hosted a professional speaker on relationship violence who came to speak to the kids at lunch. ~ Heather Hernandez, Poway High School, San Deigo, CA


The Farmville Central SAVE Chapter wil be conducting numerous activities through out the week of April 3-7, 2006 for National Youth Violence Prevention Week. During the week will be hosting Orange day, Purple day, conducting SAVE awareness activities focusing on school and youth violence statistics, and selling orange and purple hands. My SAVE Chapter is having a speaker come in and talk about relationship violence, also we will be having the National SAVE Drive during this time. As well as hanging posters, announcements over the intercom, and a teacher asked us to help her with the topic of boys against rape. Our chapter will be presenting a production we've come up with, "Journey Into A Better Tomorrow" to the senior class for Violence Prevention Week. The production is an hour mix of skits, statistics, PowerPoint, media coverage, and various monologues, covering all types of violence:harrasment, terrorism, sexual assualt, dating and domestic violence, and school shootings, as well as related issues: substance abuse, drunk driving, and criminal abductions. "Journey Into A Better Tomorrow" is a very graphic, but powerful production that is very well received, and always closes with a standing ovation. ~ Taushia Brooks, Crookston High School, Crookston, MN


2005 NATIONAL SAVE DAY RESPONSES:


This year, we plan on doing purple ribbon day, purple and orange ribbons on lockers, a huge poster that says peace in different languages, and students signing non violnce peace pledges. ~ Amber Virtue, Montbello High School, Denver, CO


The Clinton High SAVE club handed out red ribbons for National SAVE day. Also, members shared information on the intercom about school violence and drunk driving. We are proud to become members of this great organization. ~ Adriania Mathis, Clinton High School, Clinton, NC


This year our chapter has done several activities for the upcoming SAVE Day. We kicked off by hanging a huge banner in the commons area of our school with the quote, "Give Peace A Chance", from John Lennin. On the 19th we will be posting ribbons on every locker in the school-three purple in a row, then an orange one reprensenting not only the SAVE colors, but the statistic that one in every four students will be a victim to violence this year. ~ Taushia Brooks, Crookston High School, MN


Our school is having a "SAVE Time for Lunch" on National SAVE Day. We are inviting our superintendent of schools, the chief of police, our mayor and the sheriff. We are decorating our cafeteria with all types of SAVE posters, essays, art work, etc. The students will be wearing orange, wearing orange wrist bands and eating orange cake. The SAVE STORY will be aired all day long on our in-house video system. ~ Suzanne Phillips, West Clayton Elementary School, NC


Since we only have school on Monday and Tuesday, we are celebrating SAVE day on both days! On Monday, SAVE members will be wearing white SAVE shirts. Every locker will have a purple ribbon on it, but every fourth locker will have an orange ribbon to represent that one in four students are affected by violence. Every SAVE member will have 3 stickers saying "I got caught being non violent" these will only be given to those who SAVE members see are making an impact and showing their support to non violence. Our activities on Tuesday include SAVE members wearing purple SAVE shirts. (I have a feeling I'm gonna get a little crazy with that....Wear all orange and Purple! :) ) SAVE members will be passing out purple ribbons in remembrance of the victims that died of violence who attended our school. During lunch, there will be 4 tables with 4 posters for each class. These will say "Montbello Warriors Believe in Peace-Class of 06", there will be one for each class. We are making it a contest to see how many people will sign it. Which ever class gets the most signitures will be recognized in the morning announcments the following week. SAVE members will still be passing out the "I Got Caught Being Non-violent" stickers. SAVE members will be passing out a survey about school violence, teachers will collect them, leave them in Miss Kris mailbox, and the following week, we will be announcing the results. We are excited about the upcoming National SAVE Day here in Bradley County TN. We are going to kick off a fundraiser to support a shelter for victims of domestic violence. We used SAVE Day as a kick off since this month is domestic violence awarness month, and are finishing in December since it is service project month. My SAVE chapter is getting together with the other SAVE Chapters locally and the community to have a party in the park, and promote nonviolence and SAVE 's message. The Farmville Central High School SAVE chapter will create posters to bring awareness to violence and the problems it causes. We are also kicking off a Service Project to collect candy to donate to the Farmville Police Department For operation Sweet Cop for holloween. students attend an event so they are not on the steets and are safe in one spot for holloween. ~ Michael Register, Farmville Central High School, Farmville, NC


For National SAVE Day, we are joining SADD and Interact and hosting a SAVE rally. The step team will step, we will talk about SAVE's history and message, and we will watch a movie on drunk driving. ~ Darius Bush, Highland School of Technology, Gastonia, NC


Our school's SAVE group is working on extending out into the community this school year and so we will be working with our PTSA and making hand sewn and hand stuffed teddy bears. We will create small tags with the logo "SAVE at AFJH" and attach them to the teddy bears. We'll then donate them on October 19 to the American Fork Police Department, Paramedics Department, and Fire Department to distribute to children when they must respond to emergencies in our area. This way the children will know they have friends looking out for them. We're very excited to do this and our goal is lofty, about 600 teddy bears total! ~ Ashley McNeil, American Fork Junior High, American Fork, Utah


Raise awareness in the school/community about safety measures using posters or assemblies or a safety course; set up a system where students can go to talk if they feel depressed and vulnerable to unsafe habits in the school. ~ Channing Shor, Middle Creek High School, Apex, NC


We used the theme "Give SAVE a Hand" and traced our hands from orange construction paper and taped them all over our school to show our support for the SAVE organization. We had a double assembly in which we talked about how SAVE started and had our town mayor, several police and motorcycle officers, a county sheriff's lieutenant, the canine officers and the drug dog and McGruff the crime dog in attendance. All the officers spoke to the assembly in support of SAVE and how important it is to us all. At the end of the assembly we passed out clear plastic gloves containing orange M&Ms to support our theme "Give SAVE a Hand." Our local newspaper had a wonderful article of almost a full page concerning our activities and our anti-bullying and peer mediation program. ~ Suzanne Phillips, West Clayton Elementary School, Clayton, NC

This SAVE chapter is planning spirit days for the year, selling ice cream after school to raise money to pay for fleece blankets for the Dr. Laura stuff-a-bag program. ~ Canyon View Elementary School, San Diego, CA


The Gompers High SAVE chapter will be kicking off their mentoring of the middle school SAVE chapter with an assembly to be held October 22nd. ~ Gompers Middle/High School, San Diego, CA


SAVE representatives secured a proclamation for SAVE Week in Fresno from the Office of Mayor Alan Autry, as well as council members. ~ United SAVE Chapters of Fresno City, Fresno, CA


The SAVE chapter will be coordinating the school-wide signing of the pledge against> gun violence and rehearsing a school lock down to monitor safety procedures. ~ Osceola High School, Kissimmee, FL


The SAVE chapter is sponsoring a student assembly to provide students information on preventing violence. ~ Highland School of Technology, Gastonia, NC


SAVE students will kick off Operation Speak Out, an Anonymous Reporting System (ARES) for kids to speak out about violence at school in an anonymous. On National SAVE Day, students will have the opportunity to pledge to be violence Free and receive an orange and purple bracelet. ~ Bradley Middle School, Huntersville, NC -


Each day next week SAVE students will provide statistics on youth violence and information on SAVE through announcements on homeroom television and speaker. On Wednesday law enforcement and other agencies will be available during lunch with informational booths. Each student will also receive SAVE educational items. ~ South Point High School, Belmont, NC


SAVE officers will make announcements each day with a phrase of the day using the letters SAVE? At the end of the week students who can remember the phrase are given a prize. ~ Harding University High School, Charlotte, NC --


This SAVE chapter will be planning activities for the holiday season and early spring to carry the message of violence prevention throughout the year. ~ Myers Park Traditional, Charlotte, NC


students and staff will be wearing the colors of SAVE, purple and orange, to support the prevention of violence. The SAVE chapter will provide and information station featuring a banner signing activity for students to pledge against> violence. ~ Kindle Middle School, Greensboro, NC


SAVE students will be selling "Pumpkin Grams" to include positive messages to peers with funds going to service projects later this year. In addition the SAVE chapter will sponsor a poster and essay contest promoting safety and violence prevention with prizes to be awarded. ~ Allen Middle School, Greensboro, NC


National SAVE Day will begin with an 8:00 AM balloon release. A "decorate-a-door" contest will be held focusing on non-violent themes. SAVE students will create a "Fact Wall" filled with facts on youth and school violence, prevention tips and information on SAVE. Announcements are being made via school TV, website and on morning information. The school is asked to wear purple and orange for the day. ~ Eastern Alamance High School, Mebane, NC


This SAVE chapter will put up posters in the school advocating nonviolence and a safe environment. Our students raised money for these materials. We will have a SAVE student to present a message about safe schools and nonviolence on the morning and afternoon school announcement. ~ Hall-Woodward Elementary School, Winston-Salem, NC


Youth are sponsoring an assembly on gang prevention, dating violence, etc. and making good decisions. The local District Attorney, law enforcement officers, and officials in correctional facilities will assist with the presentation. The SAVE chapter is also sponsoring a "Character Education Box" that promotes responsibility, respect, citizenship, etc. Banners and signs regarding National SAVE Day were displayed. Additionally, students and faculty were asked to nominate a student who best displays the weekly character trait being promoted. Weekly winners will receive prizes donated by local business partners. ~ Carver High School, Winston-Salem, NC


SAVE students are planning a membership kick-off drive. They will also hold a Cultural Cook-Off night to raise the awareness of cultural tolerance in our community. ~ Philo Middle School, Winston-Salem, NC


students in the entire school will make bully-free school posters. The SAVE chapter will also hold a penny drive throughout the school to feed the hungry. ~ Konnoak Elementary School, Winston-Salem, NC


National SAVE Day will be the kick-off for a new anti-bullying campaign. All of students will sign a pledge banner that "these hands will not be used for violence and, everyone will be "taking a stand against> bullying and violence in our school!' Spirit Week activities will include daily anti-violence slogans and character themes, writing and poster contests, and a rally for students, the community and for parents, friends, and neighbors. Plans are also in the works for a new student designed web site to allow our students to get up-to-date information, communicate concerns, and find links to other anti-violence sites for young children. This SAVE chapter is also starting an after-school program, which is a big undertaking! ~ Forest Park Elementary School, Winston-Salem, NC


SAVE students will decorate every fourth student locker with an orange ribbon and the remaining lockers in purple to signify that 1 in 4 students will be affected by violence. ~ Middle Creek High School, Apex, NC


This SAVE chapter will have a SAVE Awareness Event. students will place awareness ribbons on parent car antennas while in the carpool lane before and after school, as well as provide parents will SAVE information. ~ Moore Square Museum Magnet Middle School, Raleigh, NC


SAVE students will perform the "SAVE song: I Believe I Can Make a Difference Song" to the student body and provide information on SAVE. ~ Zebulon GT Magnet Middle School, Zebulon, NC


The SAVE chapter will sponsor "Peace Week" October 18-22, 2004 to focus student attention on ways they can take an active stance in prevention school violence. Weekly activities include: "Wacky Hair Day" - as a reminder to keep a cool head when getting upset, "Turn Your Back on violence Day" - with students wearing shirts backwards as an outward sign to turn their back on violence, "SAVE Day" - wearing purple and orange for the colors of SAVE on National SAVE Day, "Clashin' Fashion Day" - wear print tops and plaid bottoms to show that clothes can clash but personalities don't have to, "Different Shoe Day" - wear two different shoes to show that we all elect to walk away from violence as well as to think and reflect on the paths we take in life. ~ East Garner Middle School, Garner, NC


Sixth grade students involved with SAVE have invited local law enforcement officers for a breakfast in their honor as a thank you for their efforts in keeping youth and schools safe. ~ Wintergreen Intermediate, Greenville, NC


The SAVE chapter will be kicking off a can food drive to gather donations for the Salvation Army Holiday Food Drive collection. ~ Chewing Middle School, Durham, NC


SAVE students will aid in hosting a student assembly during the morning of National SAVE Day. The mayor, local law enforcement officials, and school board members will be in attendance. students will wear orange for SAVE! ~ West Clayton Elementary School, Clayton, NC


National SAVE Day will be a day to reflect on lives lost to violence and to bring awareness to the number of school- associated deaths and injuries across the state and national, as well as weapons brought on to school campuses. SAVE students will organize a candle light vigil after the football game. ~ Shelby Middle School, Shelby, NC


The SAVE chapter will be promoting violence prevention and National SAVE Day throughout their school and community and have designated a special page on their school website for SAVE activities. ~ East Union Middle School, Marshville, NC


This SAVE chapter will kick-off a food drive to collect food for Thanksgiving meals for 20 needy families in their community. ~ Shiloh Village School, Shiloh, IL


SAVE students promoted the message of violence prevention throughout the school via announcements and the school website, as well as celebrated National SAVE Day. ~ Williams High School, Williamsville, IL


All School Safety Specialist were encouraged by Director, Clarissa Snapp of the Indiana School Safety Specialist Academy to conduct activities for National SAVE Day and National Safe Schools Week. Poster and essay contests will be held. ~ Indiana Department of Education, IN


students will hear from a speaker (Mary Anderson, Safe Schools Program Coordinator, Regional Community Policing Institute, Michigan State University) to come in and speak to our students on how to make positive contributions to the school environment. ~ Kinglsey Montgomery School, Waterford, MI


This SAVE chapter will be having a purple and orange day at school and have an information booth set up at lunch. ~ HH Dow High School, Midland, MI


During Michigan Safe Schools Week, the SAVE Club is sending home a letter, signing pledges and discussing school safety with their parents and in small groups within the school. Bookmarks will be distributed, giving the steps to take when resolving conflict from SAVE. ~ Jane Addams Middle School, Royal Oaks, MI


As part of a safe schools initiative, Cherokee Middle is implementing a new SAVE chapter. This will be their first year with the program. ~ Cherokee Middle School, Springfield, MO


To celebrate the first National SAVE Day the SAVE students will be handing out purple and orange jolly ranchers to all students for "Purple and Orange" day. All students and staff are encouraged to wear purple and orange to support SAVE and safety in schools. ~ Seville Elementary School, Pittsburgh, PA


The SAVE chapter plans to put on a mock school violence incident for the student body. ~ Lincoln High School, Ellwood City, PA


The Norristown Area High School SAVE Chapter will hold its second annual poster contest. Prizes will be awarded for the top three posters addressing the theme non-violence among area youth. Prizes will be awarded. ~ Norristown High School in Norristown, PA


This SAVE chapter plans to offer "Spook-O-Grams" for students to send friendly messages to each other. They are planning to hold a "Peace & Harmony" talent show later in the school year. ~ Maple Point Middle School, Langhorne, PA


A local radio station will be doing a live remote from the area's National SAVE Day event that will include informational booths set up by local juvenile service agencies. ~ Jackson-Madison County SAVE Chapter, Jackson TN For National SAVE Day at our school...we're hoping to be able to put on a mock presentation for the whole school.~ Caroline Ovial, Lincoln High School


The things I want my SAVE chapter to conduct for National SAVE Day would be to have a table where students could get information on what SAVE is and a poster to sign which means that who ever signs it is publicly announcing that they too are against> violence. This will later be hung somewhere in the school for everyone to see. Another idea would be to have orange and purple slits of paper which students sign. At the end of the day we put all the skinny pieces of paper together and end up with a long chain of people who are against> violence.~ Heather Hernandez, Poway High School


For National SAVE Day, I would like to see the majorty of my highschool aware; aware of SAVE and of National SAVE Day.. I would really like to see everyone participating, and making a difference. If not for everyday, at least on National SAVE Day. ~ Kathryn Little, Eastern Alamance High School


I would like our SAVE chapter to work with the art classes so we can put Non- Violent drawings for everyone to see in front of the school on the sidewalk with chalk. We could also hang posters for student awareness and since next year will be the first year our school will have all four grades we could do fight free days. ~ Channing Shor, Middle Creek High School


For my SAVE Chapter I would like to have a SAVE Carnival to be held on Friday for the Elementary and Middle School near by. A carnival would have games that are related to nonviolence, face painting, and SAVE statistics. Another idea would be have your school to compete with other school in the county about who can get the most students to wear purple and orange on National SAVE Day. Other ideas that my chapter are coming up with are having a pep rally for our school. Also we are having Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday represent each letter in SAVE . We excluded Wednesday because it is National SAVE Day. Also my school is having the step team demonstrate a show with non-violence included. ~ Gerard Wheeler, Highland School of Technology


We are working on a big SAVE Day event and the kids are doing the whole program. This is great stuff! We have local businesses and Media helping us with the event. One of our radio stations will be doing a live remote from our location and all of the juvenile services in Jackson will be setting up informational booths for people to collect literature after the program and feeding! SAVE is Fantastic and we want to get the word out! With the war and all going on there has been a lot of talk about our young people becoming "The Next Greatest Generation." Happy SAVE week! We are very busy at our school. We are reading SAVE info and "I believe..." messages during AM announcements. On Wednesday students will have an opportunity to sign non-violence pledges. On Friday, there are 27 students and 5 parents who are going to get together to learn more about each other (diversity), about SAVE and complete a community service project. Eastern Alamance High School SAVE chapter is proud to be participating in the first ever National SAVE day on Wednesday, October 20, 2004. We will be sponsoring several events that we want to get students and staff involved in that day:
1. We are encouraging students and staff to wear orange or purple on that day as those are the 2 colors of SAVE.
2. We are sponsoring a "Door Decorating Contest". Any club, class, teacher or school group that wants to enter is eligible. We are offering several themes that could be used for doors: Anti violence, Anti Smoking, Anti Drug, Anti Peer Pressure, Anti Bullying or Pro Friendship. SAVE members will be judging the doors during lunch on Wednesday and the winning door will receive 25 dollars for that group. 3. We will have a Balloon Release at 8:00 near the picnic table outside the cafeteria.

For me so far, the most rewarding experience shared by my SAVE Chapter was visiting the middle schools and sharing the message of SAVE with the younger SAVE kids. We got them excited enough to stay committed to SAVE later on in High School and we did a lesson on bullying. I am also looking forward to this summer when my SAVE chapter will be working as counselors at Camp Hope, where children of domestic violence go to get away from their troubles and relax and just be kids. We had a great violence prevention week here at Shiloh School in Shiloh, Illinois. During our Friday afternoon pizza party I was surprised by a "BE Bully Free" rap song that our Multi-age classroom (kindergarten and first grade)made up.
