What is your SAVE Chapter doing for America's Safe Schools Week, National SAVE Day and the National SAVE Rock-A-Thon?

Responses:

For National S.A.V.E. week we will have daily announcements regarding students who have been bullied or involved in any kind of violence during the school year. On national S.A.V.E. day we will have a moment of silence for all the lives lost in 2010-2011 due to any kind of violence. We will also release 21 purple and orange balloons in honor of Alex Orange. On the 22 we will rap it all up with the big rock-a-thon. The next week we are doing red ribbon week. Monday is Camo-day, Tuesday is Put a Hat on Drug & Violence, Wednesday is Pajama day, Thursday is Be a Team player, and to rap it up Friday is Spook Away Drugs & Violence. On the 25 we will be having a play against violence. ~ Brady Ledbetter, Ira High School, Ira, TX

For Americas Safe School Week, our SAVE chapter at Highland School of Technology has several events planned. To kick off the week, we will be placing orange and purple ribbons on the locker. For every 4 lockers, 3 will have orange ribbons, and 1 will have a purple ribbon. This represents that 1 in 4 students will be effected by violence this year. On Tuesday we will have Mix-It-Up day at lunch. Students will pick a color and sit at the table with the table cloth that corresponds with their chosen color. For the SAVE rally, we will show the Alex Orange video, followed by a short skit. After the skit, students will come up and read their "I believe" statements. Finally, to wrap up Americas Safe Schools Week, we will hold the "Rock-a-Thon" at a local nursing home. We chose to do a nursing home because we felt we could incorporate two community outreach events into one. ~ Jaclyn Morton, Highland School of Technology, Gastonia, NC

The Cuthbertson High School SAVE chapter will be making announcements about safe schools week each day, and putting up posters to make our student body aware of National SAVE Day. On October 19th, National SAVE Day, everyone is supposed to wear orange and purple in support of SAVE and Alex Orange. We traditionally hand out colored beads and give awards to the students who are the most spirited. It’s always a lot of fun, and the more involved you get the better the experience! ~ Jessica Weber, Cuthbertson High School, Waxhaw, NC

2010-2011 Responses:

We are currently addressing drugs and alcohol. ~ Morgan Kowitz, Wilmot Union High School, Genoa City, WI

The Oak Hill Elementary SAVE Chapter, in its inaugural year initiated the “Sign the SAVE Pledge” Campaign during America Safe School Week. On, October 20, 2010, National SAVE Day, member, Ayanna Peacock shared the 30 Second Public Service Announcement on the School’s morning show. Members conducted “lunch and learn” by showing the SAVE video and handing out SAVE materials in the cafeteria. The chapter also conducted a Poster Contest for grades K-2, and an Essay Contest for grades 3-5. The Theme was “How to Make the World a Better Place”. The poster contest winner was 1st grader Erin Martinez and the essay contest winner was 5th grader Kassie Johnson. The winners received SAVE T-Shirts. The Oak Hill SAVE Chapter culminated its recognition of Violence Prevention and Drug Prevention weeks by sponsoring a SAVE Dance at the end of Red Ribbon Week Friday, October 30th. Guest speakers at the Dance were City Councilman Michael D. Pugh, and Ms. Gretta Bush, the President of High Point Community Against Violence (HPCAV). The posters were also on display for viewing and SAVE member Asia Tomlin read the winning essay in Kassie’s absence. Admission for the SAVE Dance was $1.00 with a canned good, and $2.00 without a canned good. Portion of the proceeds will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The cans collected will initiate the chapter's canned food, dry beans and rice drive (classroom competition). The non perishable items will go to Salvation Army Kans for Kids Campaign. ~ Oak Hill Elementary, High Point, NC.

For National SAVE Day we are encouraging the students to wear orange and purple and the chapter will conduct awareness activities. ~ Casey Story, Garner High School, Garner, NC

America safe school week actually fell on the week of homecoming and the school already had plans for that week, and they won’t allow us to have multiple school wide functions on the same week. So as an alternative we moved it to the next week which is Red Ribbon week, we will conduct all of our activities then. The activities that are planned are themed days where everyone will dress up to the various themes, such as “put a cap on drugs” where everyone will wear their craziest hat. One day during the week my chapter will be producing a play titled “One Voice” the play will simulate an act of ongoing school violence towards an unpopular high school girl which will ultimately lead to her own suicide. The following day we will also be presenting a memorial to the mother of a young lady that graduated from Ira High School and was murdered a few years later due to a selfish act of violence! During the week we will also be informing students on cyber bullying. For National SSAVE Day we will perform our annual release of purple and orange balloons in remembrance of Alex Orange. ~ JP Wilson, Ira High School, Ira, TX

For National SAVE day we will be doing a peer dediation for our new and former members and anyone who wants to do peer mediation. ~ Carl Miles, Laney High School, Wilmington, NC

Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) and Student Mentor Awareness Resource Team (SMART), celebrated America's Safe School Week in extraordinary fashion. The clubs conducted a lunch and learn activity where members handed out brochures containing information on drug prevention and non violence. The clubs also sponsored a National SAVE Day contest which required each class to submit SAVE Pledge forms and a poem on non violence. The classes (one from each grade level 6th. 7th, 8th) that had 100% participation of pledge form submissions and had the highest representation at the 3rd Annual SAVE/SMART Dance (Friday October 24th) will receive a pizza party. The SAVE/SMART Dance was an outstanding event. Close to 200 Students attended the dance and was treated to special performances by Smith High School's Drumline "Steel Groove" and by NC A&T's Mu Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Music was provided by Guilford County's own DJ. Young Pro (a 9th grader with phenomenal talent). 97.1 QMG and 102 Jamz provided promotional items that served as door prizes and giveaways. The students appeared to have enjoyed themselves and welcomed the message of Non-Violence and Drug Prevention. Jackson Middle also hosted a parent workshop on violence prevention in conjunction with the dance. Council woman T. Diane Bellamy-Small spoke on behalf of Exceptional Children Assistance Center (ECAC) and Ms. Karen Harris spoke on behalf of Safe and Drug Free Schools. A tutorial of Study Island was given by Assistant Principal Rydell Harrison. A portion of the proceeds from the dance will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We are still accepting donations to help us reach our goal of $5,000.00. Canned goods collected were donated to New Light Missionary Baptist Church's Food Bank "Our students are working hard to become change agents in the school and the community," said Keith G. Pemberton, Jackson's School Social Worker. "This comes with a great deal of effort and direction. We want to make sure our students are equipped to affect change. "Our students are great and great students are not born, they are prepared"
Keith G. Pemberton, Jackson Middle School, Greensboro (NC)

We are finally "off and running" albeit a bit late. Our students have met 3 times so far and they are now grasping the magnitude of their tasks. They are excited and have created bulletin boards in 2 strategic areas of our school (we are in "learning communities A & B", posters are in some of our classrooms, and they are planning to create a "Positive Word Bank" for all students to reference. As yet, we have not planned a specific activity for next week, but as we get more organized, we will fall into step with the program's goals.
~ Dr. Rosie Smith, Northwest Career and Technical Center, NV

Our chapter plans on putting facts on violence in our School's morning announcements for safe schools week. For national SAVE day we would change what the announcement says from violence facts to SAVE facts. We plan on participating in the rock-a-thon by pledging time and effort as we rock out to old school jams on our old fashioned rocking chairs.
~ Kalynn Kowitz, Wilmot Union High school SAVE chapter

For National Safe Schools Week, we will have a PSA over the intercom. On top of that, we are doing fun activities for students, such as a writing/poetry contest on nonviolence, a banner at lunchtime to have people sign as a pledge to nonviolent/non bully behavior, and sidewalk chalk drawing on the sidewalk in the front of the building. This is the first year that Mukwonago SAVE will be hosting a Rock-a-Thon, but we are very excited. For promotion, we will be having posters (We have a member who makes absolutely amazing signs!), a PSA over the morning and afternoon announcements, and we're in the midst of trying to get a local news station to have a feature on the event (crossing our fingers).
~ Amanda Krebsbach, Muckwonago High School, WI

We are in the process of planning our activities. We will be participating in the National Day of Concern About Young People and Gun Violence on October 22 and will be conducting a one year memorial service for one of our co-founders that was shot and killed on October 18 as well as a ceremony on October 16.
