2008 NATIONAL SAVE STUDENTS OF THE YEAR


Darnella Reeder

Darnella Reeder, an eighth grade student at Jackson Middle School, was recognized by the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) for her volunteer work and efforts in preventing school violence. The 2007-2008 National SAVE Student of the Year Award was awarded to Darnella for outstanding performance and lasting contributions to the school, community, and students and for exemplifying the ideals of SAVE.

Darnella takes pride in her position as President of the Jackson Middle School SAVE Club. She is passionate and genuine when learning and sharing the SAVE message with the student body. Darnella has led panel discussions on dating violence and peer pressure; coordinated a SAVE dance; and under her leadership, SAVE chapter membership has rose significantly. She is not limited to her own school but has arranged for the SAVE chapter to visit the elementary school and speak on conflict management. Service projects include "Kans for Kids Campaign", pennies for pasta for Lymphoma and Leukemia Society; and the chapter raised over $3,000.00 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.


Neiman Riley

Neiman Riley, a Senior at North Chicago High School, was recognized by the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) for his volunteer work and efforts in preventing school violence. The 2007-2008 National SAVE Student of the Year Award was awarded to Neiman for outstanding performance and lasting contributions to the school, community, and students and for exemplifying the ideals of SAVE. Neiman's received his award at the 12th Annual SAVE Summit in Raleigh, NC.

Neiman has been instrumental in all SAVE chapter activities, co-leading projects, and volunteering for the mission of SAVE. Neiman has presented safety programs such as "Child Lures Safety" to his peers and younger children throughout his community. He has conducted presentations to train fellow students to work with each other "Student 2 Student". Mr. Riley displays great leadership qualities for the SAVE Chapter, modeling the behavior, attitude and the ideals of SAVE. Tameeca Russell, the SAVE Chapter Advisor states, "Neiman consistently exhibits a positive and productive work ethic which has resulted in successful outcomes for numerous SAVE projects."
