"SAVE Lighting the Peaceful Way for 15 Years!"

The theme of the 2004 SAVE Summit, "SAVE Lighting the Peaceful Way for 15 Years," was chosen by the National SAVE Youth Advisory Board to reflect the promise of SAVE and its stand against violence of all kinds by students everywhere for years to come!

The 2004 Summit was held at the McKimmon Center on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, March 27, 2004. There were motivating workshops, a slide show presentation of chapter photos, and a national service project effort. Workshop sessions were filled with both fun and educational information. The sessions were presented by SAVE members from across the country.

Taking a Step Forward With SAVE!

The Summit featured a display of paper footsteps to show SAVE's unity against violence. SAVE members put their best foot forward SHOWING that the steps they are taking to prevent violence are leading us in the right direction. This was a great way to be part of the SAVE Summit even if members of a chapter could not attend!

Special Speakers

Angela Bynum - Angela and some fellow students began the SAVE legacy 15 years ago. She is still making a difference through her current job with Court Services of Charlotte/Mecklenburg. Angela was also recently deployed to Iraq as a member of the National Guard.

Dawne Orange - Dawne always knew that her son Alex's death would not be in vain. Hear from her as the 15th anniversary of his death approaches. Dawne serves on National SAVE's Honorary Board of Directors and still encourages all SAVE members to "Think Twice... Act Once"

Gary Weart - Hear from the very first SAVE advisor. Gary has been active in SAVE since the very first chapter at West Charlotte High School. Now serving as an administrator at Harrisburg Elementary School, Gary is still as passionate about violence prevention as he was after Alex's death.

Jon Callegher - At 22 years of age, Jon Callegher is one of North America's youngest and most exciting speakers and role models. Through his brilliant way of thinking and incredible ability to relate to youth, Jon has left audiences spell bound with exciting new perspectives and strategies to redefine their lives and achieve their wildest dreams.

Remembering Lives Lost ~ A Memorial to Violence Victims

This year as part of the closing ceremony of the SAVE Summit, there was a balloon release in memory of young lives that have been lost to violence. SAVE members from across the country submitted youth who had lost their lives to violence for this memorial activity. An example of the cards messages:

In memory of
Kayce Steger, age 15
Paducah, KY
who lost her life to violence
in a school shooting in 1997

2003 –2004 National SAVE Service Project:"Future Footsteps"

The National SAVE Service Project has now become an annual event for SAVE chapters. Participation continues throughout the school year, and culminates at the National SAVE Summit. The National SAVE Youth Advisory Board (YAB), who directs the events and activities of the entire SAVE Summit, selected the National SAVE Service Project to be “Future Footsteps!”

This year, SAVE chapters collected new athletic shoes that were donated to the national distribution organization, Shoes that Fit. Over 300 pairs of shoes were collected and dontated to this worthwhile cause.
