STUDENTS AGAINST VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE ~ YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED
SAVE began out of tragedy fifteen years ago. In 1989, Alex
Freeman Orange was finishing his junior year of high school.
He was a caring and popular young man full of faith and hope,
but his life was ended at an off-campus party while he tried
to prevent others from being hurt. Alex's death was not,
however, in vain. His friends joined together to start a club
that would be, not only in his memory, but would serve to help
others not to be victims of violence. This organization is SAVE
and it is now growing with over 1,600 chapters in 44 states.
This story from the past is powerful, but today's stories of
youth involved in SAVE
can be just as powerful.
Consider the story of a young man influenced by SAVE.
Cris, a 4th grade student, has had a life full of transition
and chaos as he struggles through the foster care system. He
is often ridiculed because of his clothes and sometimes
tired-looking demeanor. Anger and frustration builds in
Cris and in a haze of fear succumbs to bullying others as well.
One teacher sees Cris' actions and knows of his situation,
decides to involve Cris in the SAVE program.
Though skeptical at first, Cris attends the first meeting where
he learns about Alex Freeman Orange. Instantly, Cris makes a
connection between Alex's dreams of playing football and his
own. As he learns of Alex's death and his hope for peace,
Cris makes a life-altering decision. He also wants to make a
difference in the lives of others. He is now excelling in his
classes, and serves as a role model to other students. He is
very active in his SAVE chapter and is a peer mentor to other
students. Teachers often hear him tell younger students that
he used to be just like them, getting into fights, bullying
others, and headed down the wrong path. But he knows that the
true power lies in being a positive peer influence where he is
allowed to have his young voice listened to and his actions put
to work for positive change.
Today, more than ever, youth from elementary school to college
need to know that they can be part of the solution to school and
community violence. Cris and I are asking you to help change
the life of a child. We are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization
and all gifts are tax deductible. We do not use professional
fund-raisers; therefore, 100% of your donation goes directly to
SAVE. Our official 2002-2003
fiscal year audit, performed by Certified Public Accountants
revealed that over 84% of the SAVE
budget goes to programming.
