(Students Against Violence Everywhere) after the death of her
best friend, Alex Orange. She founded SAVE
in an effort to relate in detail, her experience to students
throughout the US and in hopes that her friend's death wouldn't
be in vain. Angie is currently a Court Liaison for PreTrial Release for
Mecklenburg County. She is also an active member of the North
Carolina Air National Guard and has been for 15 years. In both
of her current roles Angie uses her past experience to assist,
support, and influence people in the community and all over the
world. Angie is one of SAVE's speakers
and serves on the SAVE
Alumni Committee. She is looking forward to continuing to spread
her message, empowering and encouraging students to make positive

Gary Weart
First SAVE Advisor
Gary Weart was the very first SAVE
advisor. He was Alex Orange's teacher and coach and has been
active in SAVE since
the very first SAVE chapter
at West Charlotte High School. He felt he had no choice in this calling. He has attended the funerals
of 12 of his students since 1975 due to senseless acts of
violence. Recently retiring as an administrator at
Harrisburg Elementary School, Gary is still as passionate
about violence prevention as he was after Alex's death.
He will share how teachers can assist students in channeling
their anger into positive outcomes during a time of crisis.
Gary motivates audience members to act. He leaves
audiences with a renewed sense of hope that they can make
a difference. Gary also serves on SAVE's
Alumni Committee.

Shawn Karsten
Shawn Karsten's childhood was every boy's fantasy.
As the son of an Emmy award-winning sports reporter,
Shawn proudly watched his dad on national television
every weekend and dreamed of following in his footsteps.
But the fantasy collapsed when Shawn realized his dad
was an alcoholic and his alcoholism was spiraling out
of control. Local gossips and national media swarmed
as Shawn's dad lost his job, then faced prison time,
and, ultimately, took his own life.
Shawn's life derailed in the years following his father's
death. His college career skidded to a halt. He abused
alcohol and drugs trying to numb his pain. But nothing
could block the pain of losing his dad.
Two years after he buried his father, Shawn made a
decision that would change his life and the lives of
countless other kids in crisis: he decided to tell
his story. Today, Shawn speaks both independently
and on behalf of the National Association of
Students Against Violence Everywhere.

Adrianna Sgarlata
Miss Virginia 2006
You can feel Adrianna Sgarlata’s love for children just
being in her presence. She began championing
the cause for bullied children since she herself was
bullied from grade school through high school. Her life took
an unexpected turn when she met a mother, Brenda, whose son,
only 13, died by bullycide (a form of suicide caused from
depression from being bullied). Brenda led Adrianna to dozens of
other parents in the same situation. After crying buckets of tears,
over many days, weeks, even months, Adrianna knew she had to do something.
She became the Virginia Director (the youngest ever, at 21)
of Bully Police USA, and helped them lobby to change laws to
protect victims of bullying in all 50 States. Adrianna successfully
initiated and lobbied for two anti-bullying bills that passed almost
unanimously and were signed into law by Governor Warner
(see www.AdriannaSgarlata.com).
With laws on the books, it was time to get the word out
that bullying, in any form, physical violence, or psychological
harassment over the Internet, is illegal in her State.
As Miss Virginia 2006 (competing in January to become
Miss America 2007), Adrianna turned to SAVE to help spread
the word, one student at a time. As a National Spokesperson
and Honorary Board Member for SAVE, Adrianna will be addressing
the students of George Mason University at the 2006
“Take Back the Night” Rally.
Adrianna also gladly lends her superior vocal talents by
singing the National Anthem at major conferences, most
recently singing at the U.S. Dept of Justice COPS national
conference with over 1300 attendees, and at the Virginia
School Safety Conference, where she also spoke. Adrianna
was recently selected by The George Washington University
as the networking luncheon speaker for the The National
Conference of the Hamilton Fish Institute on School and
Community Violence: Persistently Safe Schools 2006:
Collaborating with Students, Families, and Communities.
She gladly speaks to groups of any size.
